License Question

If I attended school in the state of New Jersey and became a Licensed or Registered Nurse, does this mean I am only licensed to work in NJ? I live in NJ however I am only 15 minutes from New York and would like to be able to work there if necessary. Does anyone have any information about this? Thanks

You can get dual licensure. Of course, that means you have to keep up both, and keep track of CEU's if applicable.

I forgot if we are asked where we plan to get licensure when we take Boards. It's been too long. Best bet would be to talk with your school, too.

What is involved with getting a dual license? Would I just have to take another exam or is there more involved? Also, do you know anything about the Nurse License Compact?

Once you take Boards, that's it.

As for dual licensure, you'd need to check the State BON in the other state you'd like to practice in. Each of our State Forums has that state's BON contact info. posted.

I do know that some states are Compact States. Wisconsin is one, but can't remember the others. I do remember I did post in the states that are Compacts.

I am sure that your school will go more into licensure when you get close to 'that time'.

New York & New Jersey are not compact states. To work in New York once you have gotten your New Jersey license, you will need to apply for a NY license through endorsement. You don't have to take another exam, just complete the proper paperwork & pay a fee. I've heard thet NY takes up to 8 weeks to get your license, so be sure to start the process early as soon as you get you NJ license.

Hi everyone,

I live in a border town and currently work across the state line and both states joined the Compact a few years ago. When that happened, I was informed that I need only keep the license of my resident state. If I remember correctly, those states are Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Illinois and Wisconsin.

I know Indiana, Missouri, and Indiana are NOT compact states. Like I said, I added a post in each state that IS compact.
