    RN no More?

Hi I'm new to this site, and need some insight.

I've been a RN for 15 years. When I job hunt, or talk with schools of nursing, it's like they shut the door in my face.

These employers & schools know nothing about me. They don't have my work, or academic information. They just are not interested, and will talk on the phone for a minute, if that.

I'm starting to think nursing skills are not needed.

Schools don't want nurses to have further training/education.

As a result I'm looking into a major life change. This will require returning to the university, and studying a total different field.

The strange thing about all of this is that I did not close the door on nursing, it closed the door on me. As a result I don't want to return any longer to the nursing profession.

What about the nursing shortage/much needed nursing skills?

Has anyone else felt this way?

    Dear RNNOMORE,

You are an RN with experience and have not been able to get a job anywhere and you have not been able to enroll into a nursing transition program either? Potential employers shut the door in your face? You doubt there is a need for people with nursing skills today?

To answer your question, no, I have never felt those things and I can honestly say that I don't know another experienced nurse who has either. On the contrary, all nurses I know say that they have never seen a greater need for nurses than there is today and the jobs are endless.

You started out asking for insight so I will offer some. The tone of your post is negative and suggests that you might need to work on your presentation. There is a reason that you are getting turned down and it is definitely not a lack of nursing jobs- anywhere in the country. New grads struggle a little to land that first job but not experiences nurses. Consider a little honest introspection before abandoning your current career or investing in another. Do you really want to be a nurse or is that major change what you really want? Maybe you're onto something there. Without working through whatever it is that needs working through, you would likely find closed doors everywhere.

    Good luck.

    An RN with limitless opportunities
