How can Nurses be so Materialistic?

I've see na very "type A" pattern in the "personified Rn".....

My master question is.....

How can so many Nurses be so "adrenaline junkied"...."Materialistic" .......and so "time Bound"...when they see such BIG doses of reality in the world i.e. death disease, etc..etc..

Wouldnt this bring them more down to a "live in the moment" disposition...and bring them to be more sentient in the whole "dont let the rose pass you by thing?"..

geeeeeeeeeesh I DONT GET IT... Is it another blind adherance?

Re: How can Nurses be so Materialistic?

I just wonder how many nurses you know and what you mean by materialistic. Most I know have decent houses but don't wear Prada but can provide nicely for their family. Do you mean live for the moment that they should all be sky divers or should they give everything away? I sure do like what I'm able to buy, I like my job and I like my time off and nice vacations and have things to do in my spare time so I just don't understand.

I don't think your video clip really applies to why are nurses materialistic question. Are you materialistic? do you have things or want things? that's a big individual thing. Are you giving time and money to charities, soup kitchens, thrift shops, disaster relief....here's a clip does this one mean anything to you???? http://www.thedashmovie.com/ what are you doing with your dash?

Re: How can Nurses be so Materialistic?

i loved both those movies. thank you for sharing them both of you. if your loved one is working for money to support the family and the money isn't making her happy then is it worth it? do you want to spend your time on earth wealthy and unhappy? you don't need an rv to go camping - you can use a tent. if you take your kids camping in a tent don't they learn more than camping in an rv? i don't live out in the country (which is expensive) but i often go to state parks (sometimes daily) to enjoy the country. everybody i've talked to who has gone to live in africa said they would go back in a heart beat. they say it's "rough" but yet they still like it. i still think your loved one is in the grips of societies teaching or brainwashing that money makes you happy. i don't think people in general really are materialistic i think we live in a society that teaches us to be materialistic.

Re: How can Nurses be so Materialistic?

The pragmatic, concise, short, trite, practical, simple, answer is that we are financially trapped... just like everyone else. Medical bills have wiped out our credit scores. .......She cannot go back to school right now because she does not want to sacrifice the remaining years that she will have left with our kids..she already sacrificed enough of their getting her RN degree. And as far as the Africa comment.. I understand the moral redemption with being over there, but I wonder if alot of people would eventually miss pottery barn, reality shows and their plasma TVs? Tell me more of what you think. I like your perspective.

Unhappy Re: How can Nurses be so Materialistic?

I am not quite so sure where you are coming from.

adrenaline junkied: And this is a bad thing? As a nurse the ability to think fast on your feet is a necessity. You want someone that can respond in a crisis not shut down and whimper in a corner.

Materialistic: This one is almost too funny. I can't believe you were serious when you posted that. Nurses are no different from anyone else. We want to provide a nice home for our families, be able to take our children on a vacation now and then without over-extending our credit or breaking the bank. I work hard for my salary as a nurse. Like most nurses I believe that I am underpaid for what I do yet I show up to work every day that I am scheduled and give my patients the best care I can give and then some.

It is hard to explain to someone that isn't a nurse the feelings one has watching a terminally ill patient, an accident victim, or just an elderly person struggle for their last breath. I have been a RN since the early 90's and have seen many patients and their families through the dying process. To this date it hasn't gotten any easier. You obviously do not not know how emotionally challenging and draining it can be to see a person and their family through the dying process.

As far as your Africa comment goes, that deserves no comment. It was totally uncalled for.

Re: How can Nurses be so Materialistic?

Well " Kimmie-bear".......

Thanks for your reply. my issues are not that the adrenaline junky-nurse is a bad person...it takes all types. Its just that they are not very healthy people in my opinion because they never learn to chill-out, and spend most of their lives never noticing a flower, and probably dying a very early death, not to mention that most of the world sees them as being fake hence their attention spann is equivilent to a ferrett on a tub of expresso. My point is:

Where's the reality in this personality after all the drama stops? I dont see much. And the divorce rate in this world probably contains this mainstream persona ( hyper-nurse) at its nucleus. Arent they actually nothing short of a waiter in beverly hills? Minus all the drugs and histrionics? :::sheeeeeesh

Re: How can Nurses be so Materialistic?

you say "the remaining years with our kids" i hope you mean their childhood years and not that she has a terminal illness? i've lived on minimum wage and i know it sucks to be really poor - mean sick landlords, rentals that don't accept pets, psycho neighbors who don't want to work, other's treating you like garbage because you're not rich - been there done that know it sucks. people who say money doesn't matter usually have enough to live decently - if they didn't then they'd know it does matter to some extent. we should have socialized medicin so people don't get wiped out by medical bills. it's not fair that really sick people have to be finanacially drained. there are so many different types of jobs for nurses i can't believe your loved one must stay where she's at. has she tried nursing homes, psych, or prison nursing?
