Hello everyone...I\'m new here and could use advice

Hi there,

I am a bit overwhelmed by the process of setting up my courses for the summer and fall semester of 2004. I need a little help. My counselors are great but there is nothing like having advice from those who have had experience.

well here I go. Please bare with me

I'm starting a new career in Nursing. I am at the very begining of pursuing an RN/Associates that with hard work and hope will lead me to a BSN.

I would be very greatful if anyone of you could give me an idea of how to set up my prerequisite courses. I am starting from scratch so keep that in mind. I'm interested in research nursing but I do understand that with so many opportunities in the feild that may change over time.

After talking with a counselor the following are the classes that I need to be accepted into the nursing program. Take note that I'm listing the UC transferable courses.

Psych 1 General Psychology 3 units
Anatomy 1 Intro to Human Anatomy 4units
Physio 1 Intro to Human Physiology 4units
Micro 1 Into into Microbiology 5units
English 101 (I have tested to this class) 3 units
Sociology 1 or anthropology 102 (Cultural) 3 units ea.
Speech 101 3 units
Psych 41 Life span Psychology 3 units
Biology is suggested to take before taking science courses 4 units

General ED courses needed for Associate degree, Also transferable.
Spanish 1 and 2
US History 3 units
Philosophy 19 (suggested by counselor) 3 units
Physical Education 1 unit

Math competancy completed for Algebra

If I can squeeze it in I'd like to take Chemistry and a little more math during undergraduate studies. (This would satisfy prerequisites that are asked of those pursuing areas of research).

My question to those who have taken and completed these courses is what courses outline do you feel was the easiest to handle. I don't want to overload myself the first and second semesters. I want to even it out the best that I can.

Any and all advise is welcome. Keep in mind that I will be taking summer courses!

Thank you for your time!

Best,
Arwen

P.S. I am also taking my BLS class in April. I am taking a course in CNA in April as well to find part time work as a CNA as I go to school.

Do you Yahoo.. I hate typing and this could be a long process back and forth.. Click on my name at the left of this post WindingRoad and it will bring you to my profile at the bottom of that there is a clickable area called private message or the like.. Do that and we can work on this...Boy, you start early.. I wish I were so disciplined...

It really depends on your learning style and how many classes you can take at once. Are you going to be fulltime or part time student. Don't load up on classes that are all hard for you at once but have part of the harder ones and part of the easier ones at the same time. I did take A&P together then when you learn the bones you learn what those bones do at the same time.

Hey cassioo I called the new poster and we chatted quite abit last night. Gotta love those unlimited weekend cell minutes.. I had the same advice..Mix up your sciences with English courses. And if she takes speech then write one paper for both courses.

I also encouraged her to take her sciences in the Fall or Summer ..I think students get short changed by taking them in summer and they are too hard to do crunch wise..

Re: Hello everyone...I\'m new here and could use advice

I'm glad you called her WR 'cause this would have been a long post! hehehe... basically my advise is the same as the others-

I wish I'd been smart enough to ask for some advise before I started. *LOL* Like the true rocket scientist I am (most of the time) I stuck myself with taking Microbiology AND Organic Chemistry together during one summer semester! Oh, and our Micro prof made us memorize the entire textbook, captions under the pictures and all.... good grief.. how in the heck did I ever manage? I did but if I had to do things over again I'd pay attention to the advise you just got & not do that! *grin*

Best wishes!

Re: Hello everyone...I\'m new here and could use advice

I did my 5 hour chem class in the summer. The prof was a true Witch. I thought I had an ulcer everyday and after driving part way there always thought I'd throw up. We started with 35 in the class ended with 15 and 9 passed. We'd cover a chapter or more per day then have a quiz about every day. You had to do the math her way (which isn't my way) and show your work. (I can look at some problem and tell you the answer is 2 but I do all the work in my head and when I have to stop and do the steps I don't get it right go figure) She even made us come to class on July 4th when the school was closed and the janitor had to let us in. We took a standardized final that had things we hadn't covered (but I'd learned in other classes) and that was actually easier then her normal stuff. Oh and complain to the head of the science dept????? that was her husband he was happy to have her nagging us instead of him
