Hello Tx,

One of the resources Pilar lists on Spanish4nurses is a great quick reference also:

Spanish for Nurses and Medical Personnel, Nursingpower.net:"Welcome! These brief courses are designed not only to help the healthcare provider speak to the patient in Spanish, but also to aid in working in a spanish speaking environment. This is not meant to be comprehensive or all-encompassing in any way. What we have designed here is merely a reference or a tool.

Definitely coming across more Spanish-speaking patient's these days. One of the most frustrating things I had to deal with early in nursing, was having the last name "Lopez" but not being able to speak the language.

Working on getting fluent now. . . .

Re: Free Spanish Educational Resources

it really is good to also have some tapes or something if you can't go to a class. I do speak some Spanish and a co-worker really does want to learn but she's trying to do it just reading so it's not quite right.
We've run into another HIPPA problem. We used to have people in the hospital or on call for different languages.. like housekeepers, docs, transporters etc that we could call if needed now we aren't to use them because it could be a breach of privacy. So now we call this 800# and tell them what language you need then you get on one phone and the patient gets on the other I ask a question on the phone then the "phone person" asks the patient..patient answers and phone person tells me the answer. I don't think it's a real good system for the most part. We've had all kinds of dialects and it's hard without being face to face as lots of languages use body language etc and then we've had Spanish speakers from South America who also couldn't read Spanish so you can't even point to a word in the book.
