Re: Finding work

besides nursing and teaching nursing I also sell avon and a line of jewelry at home shows. I can't live on them but I make about $5000 a year with the avon plus get 40% off my stuff and make a couple $100 on each jewelry show. You can have a garage sale if you have enough junk or sell things on e-bay on consignment if you have stuff to get rid of. Other than that a job of some sort if I had to feed my family I'd flip burgers at McD's or be the door greeter at wal-mart....actually I've thought about getting a job at a clothing store just to get the discount...I'm cheap ok

Re: Finding work

unfortunately my legs would not take the standing at Mc D's
I have tried before to work at something other than nursing and I couldn't take the pain. My body must have adjusted or it's because of the moving around. I was hoping maybe some one would know some type of internet business that is legal. Oh well I will just keep plugging along. I am kind of limited as to what I am physically able to do. Something has to give soon. I know I would not be able to work in surgery. Trouble is this all makes me look bad. I guess I am just stuck.

Re: Finding work

How do you work nursing at all if you can't take the walking? I know my legs are killing me right now after the past 2 12 hour shifts now I"m on my way to do the March of Dimes walk then to work for 6 hours. In a normal 12 hour shift nursing I'm lucky to sit down 2-3 hours total with 30 minutes being giving and getting report, 30 for lunch, bathroom maybe then plop down to chart and do order here and there. I don't want to sound harsh myself but I have a co-worker who d/t her weight (5' tall as wide as she is tall) who is nice as she could be but I run my ass off working with her because she can't do it. It's hand me this or that will you see what 101 wants, disappears at just the right time (ie admission from OR arrivals). She gets paid just like I do and I want to work with people that can pull their weight so we can all sit together when everything is done. I do OR too and I am able to get more sitting done in there and recovery then on the floor. One patient to care for, no running up and down the halls fetching and doing once my counts are correct I just have to wait for the next one. Maybe you could try home medical transcribing if you can type well but that usually takes some training too but a local business college could train you in that as you know the language already.

Re: Finding work

That is exactly why I don't work in surgery. But you missed my point I was talking about my moving around as apposed to standing in one place is what helps. I gaurantee you that I have never let any one do my work I have always done my own. I have worked mostly in geriatrics, no one else can do your work, the only time I asked any one to do anything was when there was an emergency. and I often end up doing work for the so called well nurses as they use it as an excuse. not all just a few bad apples. before I worked in this state I was working 6-12 hr. shifts a week and had to keep waking up the LPN ( young and fit. Sorry I want to stay in nursing as a nurse, that is what I went to school for not typing, not pushing pills, nursing. Besides what I can't do most others can't either or they hide it by working 2 hours off the clock. Some days are worse than others. Now we all know what goes on in facilities, all it takes is one bad apple in the wrong position, the next thing you know you are stuck working with all the aides no one else wants and the good aides are given to the nurse they want to make look good. Besides I have never heard of RN's sitting in OR. And why should one nurse be given the opportunity to do nothing why the others are running their buts off. I agree with you in that respect. I did CPR from a standing position, maybe you think that can't be done? I am not as flexable as I used to be. and yes after 25 years of nursing I would like a different position, like case management, ADON, DON etc. what I was asking was if any one knew of a way to make money until I find the right position?

Re: Finding work

sitting is as bad as standing in one spot, at least for me it is. Besides why should nursing get to pawn off the damage they do to their nurses to another profession?

where did anything come in where I thought CPR couldn't be done from standing? I think most CPR is probably done standing at least on pts in the hospital most aren't on the floor that I've seen like they might have you do in a CPR class...You asked how you can make money until you find the right postion get a disposable job while you're looking for that "right" job then you don't like any of the suggestions for making money guess you can get a staff nurse job then quit that when you find that "right" job but staff nursing would involve the same old staff nurse problems. P.S. I don't know how much OR you have worked but when I circulate in OR I can sit or at least lean against a wall or trash can. You get the pt ready, count, record times, count a couple more times, clean up blood spills on the floor if needed but if you aren't scrubbed in you can sit unless you just like standing and waiting for the next count.

Re: Finding work

Sorry I didn't make myself clear I was just pointing out that there are some things that I can do like CPR from a standing poition when the pt. is on the floor. Another sorry, I know it is difficult to understand me sometimes. I just get a little frustrated when I am trying to find work that has to accomadate some of my physical limitations. I thought they had techs that did that stuff in the OR. I didn't mean that I wouldn't work as a staff nurse. But any of these positions takes time and I need money now and most of the throw away jobs require a lot of lifting or standing. Nursing is hard work also but it is different that lifting boxes from the floor, or picking up large containers and dumping them into the soda machines etc.
No I have never worked in OR, realy not my thing, I like them after the damage has been done. If you think of anything or hear of anything let me know. Thanks
