Re: Discuss Nursing shortage could be looming

I think there has always been a shortage. Just seems to get worse. Pay has remained essentially the sameI for years and hasn't drawn new people into this field. Pay for traveling use to be much higher, but I have noticed a drop in the last several years. Travel companies are taking a larger piece of the pie to cover overhead. There needs to be more media advertising the nursing jobs and rewards. But yes it will get worse. This makes nursing sometimes unsafe because this increases the patient nurse ratio. You're frequently stretched to the limit and can miss vital changes in a patient. We all have been there and its never accetable.

I think it will be an issue until they get more instructors. How to solve that problem is paying them more and maybe they need to look how medicine is taught as a model. I've never been to medical school, but I assume both the facility and the college pay the doctors. I don't believe this is the case with nurses. This could be a possible solution.

Just had a thought: How many schools are there for (future) MD's, vs schools for nurses?

Agreed! The shortage falls on lack of instructors/nursing programs, rather than applicants.
