Cath Lab + fertility?

Hello! I am interested in taking a job in a Cardiac Cath Lab as an RN. One thing I am concerned about - I want to have kids in a few years, and am worried that I will become infertile from the radiation. I know there is lead but I am concerned. Also, when I do become pregnant, will I still be able to work there, or will I have to stay out of the cath lab? I don't want to take the job if this will be a problem down teh road for me or my babies' health. That is very important to me.
SO - Has anyone else had any fertility problems after wotking in a cath lab or interventional radiology department? Or can anyone help me out in anyway with this? Thanks!

Re: Cath Lab + fertility?

Hi Bluesky,

Interventional labs have lead to be worn. My personal experience has been that they have full coverage (meaning front and back coverage). Everyone also wears thyroid covers.

In addition, a personal film badge (just for you) is worn when any exposure occurs. These badges are checked monthly. The amount of exposure is posted annual, monthly and total exposure (cumulative for the lifetime of the badges) are posted with each monthly report. If your exposure gets close to unacceptable level you will receive a warning. This is a requirement.

There are also other places in the cath lab where no exposure occurs....running the computer, pre- and post op areas are examples.

Hope this helps...if I can be of further assistance, please let me know.
