Career Decision

Introduction for the forum.

I decided when I got out of the Marines that I wanted to go into health care and started out as a pre-med/biology major. While in school that first time around, I met and married a nursing student who is my wife of over 10 years now. The decision was made that I would drop school so she could finish her BSN while I worked, and then when she was done, I would return to school. We had a child, bought a home, I got a decent job, etc., and over the last decade have picked up a few more credits, but never finished anything.

Recently we have gotten into a position where I can return to school full time and finish a degree I started oh so long ago. I've decided on nursing, and am taking 2 pre-requisites next semester which will allow me to apply to the nursing program in March for August matriculation. There's no guarantee that I'll be accepted of course, but I'm going to try my hardest.

I've taken a phlebotomy and EKG course in hopes of getting some PRN work at the hospital while taking classes. I spoke with HR today, and she said she should be able to find something for me and will call me back this week. I'm quite excited about the whole prospect of it.

From watching my wife go through school, I know that I'll be exposed to many areas of nursing while doing clinicals, so I'm not set on any one specialty yet, but have a great interest in cardiac care.

The program I'm applying to is an RN/AS program, and the University of South Florida offers an AS to BSN program at the same community college for those that want to further their education. I do want to get the BSN, but am taking it one step at a time. There are quite a few more applicants than available slots for the program I'm applying to, so I'll be very anxious until I know if I'm accepted or not. If I'm not picked up on my first try, I'll just take some co-requisites in the interim and try again.

I'll be doing much more reading than posting until I get into the program, but wanted to introduce myself and say hello to all. It's great to be exposed to all of the different perspectives on here.
