career change (teaching high school to nursing?)

I am a high school biology teacher (Tampa area), with a BS in Bio/Zoo and am considering a career change... I'm 38, married with 3 boys... I have some questions I'd like to ask:

* What are some specific positives/negatives in the nursing field in your experience?

* Will any of my previous coursework be transferable, and what length of study am I really looking at?

* What is the job market really like? What are the in demand specialties/areas? Are any really better than others?

Thanks!

Re: career change (teaching high school to nursing?)

Hi,, Your BS undergrad could possibly let you go right into a Master's Progam. Depending on how old your undergad is many if not most of your credits will transfer. Especially if you are able to stay within the same university system. Mine did.

As with every profession there are always gonna be pros and cons. I always say, "If you find the perfect job please let me know as I wanna go with you".. Nursing IMHO can't be any worse than teaching HS students. You have the teaching part down and that is part of nursing..Albeit a part we sometimes don't have time to perform as much as we should or would like to.

I believe that if your course work from your undergrad is rather recent you would only be looking at clinicals and possibly one or two other courses..Such as Human growth and Development..

Nursing is in demand. Albeit FLA is low paying. Nurses IMHO aren't to proactive YET..

As for a speciality area that depends on what you are interested in.. Never go into any job just because it's "hot" if you don't like it..That's torture.

Nursing is very diverse.. Maybe with your education background you could teach nursing at some point although you'll need a Master's to do that. Or you could be an education specialist for other nurses in a hospital.

The possibilities are endless.

I have a gazzillion minutes on my cell today and am on the east coast if you are interested in chatting "live" Click on my name to the left of this message and private message me and we can chat if you want to.

Too much info to discuss here..

I would bet you'd only be looking at clinicals also.

Around my area nurses and teachers are about on the same pay scale with nurses being a little higher (I was making more then my dad after 5 yrs of nursing with a BSN he had 30 years and double masters teaching highschool physics and earth science)
The possibliities really are endless in nursing not just hospital or MD office...just depends on what you want. That's where importance of clinicals comes in so you can see a little of each area.
