Let me hear what you think!

Re: Is 50 too old to start travel nursing?

Welcome to the site and I would say NO, 50 is definitely not too late to start travel nursing as long as you are healthy and in shape. I have thought about it also after retiring from the Navy. Its a great way to see the country and get paid for it. Work 12 hour shifts and you have plenty of time off to sightsee and exercise. Good luck:luck:

I'm only 26, but I know a lot of nurses who waited until their children were grown & out of the house to start traveling. I say go for it!

Re: Is 50 too old to start travel nursing?

Thanks all for the encouragement! I am investigating different companies right now. I have always worked in smaller facilities where we have had to "DO IT ALL". I worry that I will not be specialized in any one area well enough. I have always loved nursing and the patient always comes first with me but will this be enough?

I started out in a small hospital, too (35 beds) and then to a 544 bed tertiary care center. I think having to do it all made it easier to focus on a main area of practice. The larger hospital had specialized educators and made it pretty easy to pick it up. Just my experience but I think that the smaller hospitals give you an excellent base. When there is no one to call you learn alot!

Re: Is 50 too old to start travel nursing?

Any hospital would love to have you at 50. You are dependable, stable, mature, et cetera . . . I could go on and on! Small hospitals also need travelers so if you are more comfortable in that setting, you don't have to change. As far as travel companies go, check out RNNetwork - I worked with them for 5 years and had almost no problems. The problems I did have were facility related and quickly fixed by RNNetwork. They pay well and the insurance (which is quite good) starts the first day of your contract!

:luck:

I started at 51. I'll be "out here" for 5 years come the first of July.
