    New traveler!

Hi, I am new to travel nursing and will start in August. I have not gotten my assignment yet but am looking to go with Access Nurses or Medical Express. I will be hopefully in Birmingham, AL or Nashville, TN first, since I have family there. I am curious what most of you do for insurance, since some companies end coverage on the last day of the assignment. Do most have private insurance on their own or is there something I am missing? Thanks and glad to be meeting you all! Any advice is much appreciated. Have a great week!

Welcome! I have my insurance through my company, RN Network, and they do NOT end my insurance on the last day of my assignment. If I went with another company, my insurance coverage would end on the last day of the month. So, if my assignment ended on the 3rd, I'd still be covered until the 31st. RN Network has some of the best insurance I've seen amongst travel companies- low co-pays, NO deductibles, it's FREE & starts on Day 1 of your assignment, plus dental & vision... I was also able to add my husband to my plan for HALF of what other companies wanted to charge...

Thanks so much! Will make sure and mention that to the recruiters I have spoken with and will check out RN Network if it doesn't work out. Have a great week!

Make sure you check with other agencies. Access quoted me $4 less per hour for the same package on an assignment other than the housing they offered was much cheeper and they could have offered me even more!! Be prepared for some one from their company to call you EVERY day. From the sounds of it, RN network and healthcareseeker.com are a couple good companies.
I pay for my own ins. I have a family and my coverage is pretty good. We are in good health and take no meds/have no illnesses. Our deductable is high, but very affordable. We pay $310/mo. Check with ins cos in your state and they can guide you in the right direction. That way, if you take assignments from different companies to get to the locations that you want to go, you insurance if portable and you don't have to screw with it. You can also make more $$/hour if you don't take their ins.
    Good luck!!

    Hi, amanda,
I also travel with RN Network and the insurance isn't so good is rural areas. I have to pay a $250 deductible to begin with and My husband had an MRI and they only covered about 300. of a 1300. bill. So, I am a little disenchanted with the " great" insurances. It hasn't been so good for me.

For the areas you mention, try calling Millenia Medical Staffing (based in the Carolinas). Although I haven't worked with them yet, I have spoken to Kent (PM poster for phone number)
& found him to be an honest, ethical, nurse advocate recruiter. They just didn't have any contracts where I wanted to be. And, he will not just send you somewhere to make the money. If the hospital does not treat nurses well, this company pulls the nurses and will not work with the hospital again. They were recommended to me by 4 different nurses while I was doing a contract from Hell. Just wish they had more contracts in New England since I need to escape the summer heat.

Edited to add: Sorry I didn't know that phone numbers weren't permitted. Was just trying to help & didn't want the poster to think I was trying for any type of a referral bonus. Again, my apologies.
