    Hi there,

I'll post a reply here and hope you see it. I'm picking up what may be a language barrier. Are you new to America and trying to get used to the language and customs? Are you new to the ICU or is it both? It may take a bit more time for you to get used to everything especially the culture. To answer your question, the usual nurse to patient ratio in ICU is 1:2 so that is something you will have to accept. I recommend that you speak to your manager right away because you sound too stressed out. Are you working with a preceptor now? If not, you probably should be. If things don't get easier for you to manage in a few months, critical care may not be the place for you.

    Good luck,

    R

I think ICU can be overwhelming for a lot of nurses. I did my preceptorship in ICU last year of nursing school and before starting there I thought that's where I wanted to work. After 1 month and a half (that's how long the rotation was), with a preceptor, I knew that was not the place for me. I felt anxious and unsure of myself the whole time and basically hated it. You need to go after what is best for you and if that means getting out of the ICU I would do it. Good luck!
