I would contact the BON of whatever state you and your dh are planning on moving to, and asking what you need to do. Each state is different, so....

I really am not sure if this is the place to post this question, but I'll try it anyways and hopefully someone may be able to help me!
Here is my dilemma/question:
I am a nurse in Norway and married to a U.S. Citizen. We are currently living in Norway, but want to move to the U.S. in a few years. I have looked into several international nursing agencies, but I was hoping there was another route I could take as I wouldn't need a "green card" through these agencies as I am married to a U.S.C already and would obtain it through marriage...etc. Is there another way to become licensed to work in the U.S.? How do I become licensed? Is it possible for me to just take the NCLEX-RN in the state I want to work in or do I need to also take some international nursing exam?
Will I able to complete all of this in Norway or do I have to do this in the U.S.? Which would be the "faster/better" way to do it (i.e. move to the U.S. and then apply or complete work from Norway)?? I do realize I would need to take an English proficieny exam, but that wouldn't be a problem.
Again, any suggestions or advice would be helpful!
Regards,
Nurse in Norway

If you are married to a US citizen you will get the green card/social security number without a problem. You need to contact the board of nursing for the state you wish to reside/work in. Foreign-educated nurses need to pass the English and NCLEX exams (with some exceptions for nurses from English speaking countries: UK, New Zealand, some parts of Canada, etc. who aren't required to pass the English exam). Some states have additional requirements therefore it is best for you to contact the board of nursing first. Depending on the state you may also find good information about this on the board of nursing website.
Thanks much for your help!
