Travel nursing for family....is it an option?

Have you ever had a family travel before? I had my son a year ago and I would love to be able to travel with him and my fiance, but I always hear of people who are single with no families being the only ones to travel. Is this true? If not, what can your company do for me?

It is true that the majority of travelers out there travel before having children or after their children have let the house. Having said that, there are many who travel with their children, especially when not yet in school. Depending on where you go and what company you go with the packages will vary. The standard package out there is pay, fully furnished single apartment, travel, and insurance (usually the company pays for the nurse and nurse usually pays for additional family members). This is not an absolute but rather just a standard package. The most important factor in choosing to travel is, "Do you and your fiancé want to travel?" If the two of you are excited you will enjoy it and if you decide you don't then it is only for 3 months (on average) and then you can head back home. Labor and Delivery nurses are highly sought after so you will have a lot of locations to choose from. If you are interested you can give me a call or an email. Talk to you soon.

I'm trying to get info about traveling with family, too. I have three kids, ages 15, 12 and 8. I'm hoping some other nurses who have traveled with children will reply on this site. I'm sure there are any number of great opportunities for an OB nurse. I see them all the time. I do local staff relief for Favorite Nurses and have for years. I have never traveled with them but I know they do travel contracts and have several openings for OB nurses. I've been working for them for about 10 years and have never, ever had any problems with them when I've done local work for them. Is your fiance available to watch the baby while you work? Sounds like an ideal situation if that is the case. Good luck.

I had my son 17 years ago, and I AM one of Lanora's traveling nurses. I can guarantee you that traveling with a family is the only way to go! I work with nurses who go home to all kinds of problems when they are gone for weeks and months. My problems are just the average problems, not all bunched up and waiting for me when I hit the door. Don't have to wonder about if my husband is cheating on me while I'm gone for three months, I know that he is at my apartment waiting I homeschool my son, but there are several other ways to do it by doing a 9 month assignment while the kids are in school, and then another 3 month summer assignment when the kids are out of school... some switch during the summer break and the Christmas break. My husband is disabled, so he is a full time Mr. Mom, but my son works at fast food restaurants and doesn't have a problem getting a job... I know another couple in which the husband does subsititute teaching, and others where the husband works maintence or housekeeping at the hospital.

Where there is a will... there is a way!
