General schooling and Math in nursing?

:confused: Hi all Im hopefully will be starting classes for Rn next fall. My question is about schooling and math that I will be doing. Im not good at math. How much of it do you use daily? What math classes do you have to take? Seems everyone says Rn schooling is terribly hard. CAn you tell me what is hard about the classes or what classes are difficult? I was told that since I havent been in school for 5 years I have to take a comp test. To determine what classes I might need to take before. Im really naive to all of it. I guess Im wanting a rundown of what to expect the 2 years of school I will have to take without the terminology that goes with it. I have never been to college before so alot of college terminology and abbreviations I dont know.

I'm also going back to school to work towards my RN degree, but unlike you it's been qiute awhile since I walked into a college class room. I will be going to school here in New Jersey and they require transfer students to take both a Math and reading comprehension test. You may not be required to take either test IF you had college math courses already with a C+ or better ( must be in the last ten years of study) also, if you had taken the college placement test at another college ( no time limit here) and finally which may apply to you, your high school SAT score for Math is 470 or better. I know this sounds a bit much, but don't get upset, I'm now studing for the same test and it's like being in mid-school again. Take the test but study for it, it is to be taken seriously.The worse that could happen is that you have to take a college developmental course to get you back on track. Hope this helps. Math is essential in medical field. You will need basic math in Pharmacology. I suggest borrowing a book from your local library or buy/download a computer program on elementary math--even a kid's program. To me, the hardest part about nursing program is not having the time to do my homework or outside the classroom activities because I was also working full-time.

Don't be discouraged to accomplish your dreams. Any college major is hard. You'll meet people that will give you discouraging words about the program but like I said any goal worth attaining will have roadblocks to encounter.

I wouldn't worry too much about the Math portion, I'm not a whiz at mathematics either, but did just fine.

It is very much basic math concepts and arithmetic. Fractions, decimals, simple formulas and calculations. You don't need strong Algebra, Trigonometry or Calculus for nursing, just basic math.

Do your homework, and you should be fine. It's the people that don't take the "basic math for pharmacology" seriously, that end up making careless mistakes and failing the class.

The only math in my ADN nursing program was a one credit course with basic concepts and a quiz on the homework at the start of every class. Long as you did the homework and read the book, you were fine.

Most schools have subsidized tutorial services available if you need extra help.
