First, I would ask if you are a RN? Most hospitals require Rn liscence first. You can get Associate Degree or Bachelor of Science. If you are still pursuin your RN, show interest in the OB rotation while in school and try to speak with charge nurses or unit managers to find out if they offer an internship program after completing your RN. Most nurses get their foot in the door just out of nursing school and the hospital will provide and internship program during your employment with them. This program last about 3-6 months. I did this, and it was great. Most large hospitals offer a program like this. Good Luck!

The first step is to get a nursing license, preferably an RN.

You don't become an "labor/deliver," "ICU" or other specialty nurse until after you earn your license.

Basic nursing programs teach core skills/concepts you'll need as a nurse.

The specialization come in after you're working in the field. For now you can look into labor/delivery organizations, websites for more information.

Could also see if you your community college or guidance counselors can set up a "shadowing" experience where you can follow a nurse on the floors for a day.

You can meet a few LD nurses, learn more about them here:

Also look at Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing, http://www.nursefriendly.com/nicu

    Hope that helps.
