| Super Moderator | Florida: Nursing shortage could attract more men Mon, Oct. 04, 2004: Florida: Nursing shortage could attract more men to the field:"Mike Barbour is a man in a woman's world, but he sees his world as a changing one. Barbour graduated from nursing school in 1977 and has spent more than two decades in the field. Over the years, many patients have left their mark on his memory. One small boy often comes to mind. The patient was puzzled by Barbour. "He finally said to me, 'What are you? Are you a doctor? You can't be a nurse because nurses are women,'" Barbour recalled." http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansas...9832060.htm?1c Do you think we could use more male nurses? I have to wonder how sentiment is changing towards men. When I first became a nurse, I got the impression from some of my coworkers that I didn't belong on the floors. Others were happy to have me and didn't care what gender I was as long as I got my work done and carried my weight. Know a lot of male nurses that are given a hard time. | Re: Florida: Nursing shortage could attract more men I've yet to actually work in the field, so maybe things are different on the inside, but I'm a leukemia survivor and I've spent a great deal of time on the other side of nursing. Personally, I've never met a male nurse who was "in it for the money" or who slacked off or caused problems. Yes, patients do notice the nurses that aren't doing what they should (especially kids, we see everything)It was a male nurse at Arnold Palmer Hospital that made me want to become a nurse. He was so happy, all the time, and he LOVED his job. I would welcome more male nurses, and it's unfortunate that so many qualified guys are turned away by the attitudes. |

| Super Moderator | Re: Florida: Nursing shortage could attract more men It's a phenomenon not unlike nurses eating their young. This thread discusses it in detail. http://www.ultimatenurse.com/ubbthre...8783/Main/3863 Andrew Lopez, RN http://www.4nursing.com |

| Re: Help Breast Cancer! Dear Nurses, October 16, 2004 Greetings! My name is Leah L. Logan. I am a CNA in the Dallas, Texas area. I am writing you, because today after watching thousands of people walk for the Susan B. Coleman Breast Cancer fund, I cried! I first cried because back in 1996, my mother, Linda L. Logan, at the age of 41 died from breast cancer. Then I cried because of all of the people walking that wanted to help. Then from shame, I cried because since my mother died, I have done nothing to honor her or give to the Susan B. Coleman Breast Cancer Foundation. After 8 years since mom died, I have decided to do what ever I can to raise money for this program. My goal is to raise $10,000 over next 12 months for the Susan B. Coleman Breast Cancer Foundation. I have a plan in place, but I can’t do it alone. If any of you are willing to help me, please write to me with your name and phone number, and I will contact you soon. Please don’t be afraid to reach out. And please remember to do your own self-exams and get your mammograms! Here is the address: teamnewvision@yahoo.com |

| Re: Lopez Thinks Fighting Breast Cancer Is Spam! Mr. A. Lopez,I am a CNA, and this issue is important to me, Mr. A. Lopez. I gave care to my mother while she lay dieing, and this is where I got my first start in nursing. It has everything to do with the nurse shortage, because my mom was a RN. And this world is short one of the best nurses around! Up until now, I was your biggest fan on this sight! Your poems helped me get through some hard times. Some of your poems don't have anything to do with nursing either, but I still enjoy them! If you never had anyone die from breast cancer in your family, of course you would make this kind of statement. This forum is about nursing and any issues we have. No one is trying to take away attention from your nice www.4nursing.com Leah L. Logan PS I hope you care more about others, who are sick where you work, more than you are showing here, otherwise they are in big trouble! |

| Re: Lopez Thinks Fighting Breast Cancer Is Spam! whoa, calm down.... did you realize that you posted to a message about male nurses???? It should have been posted as a seperate topic, or in a post that is talking about breast cancer, or why you became a nurse. This forum is about nursing issues, but what you wrote has NOTHING to do with THIS POST. Andrew has the power to report your post, but instead he choose to simply correct you, and you flipped out? I don't know you, and I don't know Mr. Lopez, but maybe you should think before personally and professionally abusing people. You post was rude, and obnoxious and reflects very poorly on you and on your cause. |

| Re: Just like Men! Don't tell me to calm down about something that I strongly care about. Men get breast cancer too! And you should care. It's always flipping out when a women speaks up! I don't care what you think about me or my cause because you don't know me! If I get banned for speaking up for myself then I don't need this site anyway! |

There is a place for posts like yours, if you had created a new thread, instead of posting the same message in several totally inappropriate places, I wouldn't have said a word. Just FYI I do have the authority to ban users. Consider yourself warned. Next time you spam the boards, you will be banned from posting again. Andrew Lopez, RN http://www.4nursing.com |
