Cancer Screening may not save your life!

Why Cancer Screening May Not Save Your Life | Newsweek Voices - Sharon Begley | Newsweek.com

This article is interesting in light of Baucus and other health care reform bills that want to reduce payments for screening and or change recommendations for less frequent screening.

I opted a long time ago to have mammograms only every 5 years as there has never been breast cancer in 4 generations of my family.

Peace and Namaste

Hppy, thanks for the post!

This is just something to think about: We all start from one cell, right? That cell divides ad nauseum. One day, a brain cell may 'decide' to become a bone/fat/whatever cell. Who's to say we can't 'pass' that tendency on for cancer?

True, some women have a family tendency for breast CA, but....think about what I posted.

I don't disagree with you and I do the breast self exam - My OBGYN is on board with my personal decision - but it is interesting that this study comes out right in the middle of health care reform debate especially when the current administration wants to cut costs by eliminating screening "That may not be helpful" That's a direct quote from our President.

I think if you want to have the screening you should be able to have it but I don't think they have to be routinely done on every person( especially at taxpayer expense). I took a client of mine to the obgyn for a pap a few months ago and the OBGYN said he didn't know why she was having it and it was a waste of Medicaid Taxpayer money to do it since she was not sexually active and at extremely low risk for cervical cancer - I told him that the regulatory agency that licenses our facilities requires the paps be done yearly so he did it - but my client who is profoundly disabled (ward of the state unable to give informed consent or refuse due to being non-verbal) cried during the whole procedure and was upset for days after. Seems like over-kill. BTW it came back negative.

Peace and Namaste
