Help. Need to speak to someone in similar situation.I am a single parent with no extended family support.My 15 year old son has recently been diagnosed as early childhood schizophrenia, following an acute psychotic episode.He has had 2 relapses since then in the past 3months since initial diagnosis.Most recent requiring involuntary admission.Both relapses were because of non-compliance with medication.He is unable to cope with mainstream schooling because of his condition and will soon be starting home schooling.I am a registered nurse.I have been off work for past year ,but was hoping to return to part time work. Has anyone else out there managed to return to work successfully under similar situations?And if so how did they manage?Plesase , any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Geez, that's a handful to deal with. I'd set up a system very quickly of calling throughout the day for quick check-ins and look into support groups for you as a parent.
Do they have any Baylor Programs were you are? Where you only work the weekends and get paid full benefits? With your son to deal with that would probably be your best bet unless working night shift would work better for you.

I don't know if this is any help to you but I posted it on all nurses. I was concerned that once entering orientation as a new grad RN that my husband might die and I'd need personal time and was wondering if they allowed for that. I am hoping to enter a grad program and have been caring for my husband for last two years as he has MND. He entered a long term facility two months ago. I have done very little nursing in a hospital environment during that time apart from clinical pracs as a student, and have been advised that I am best to be up front and let management know if there may be some family concerns. I hoppe you can work something out with your employers re your son and his needs. Good luck.
