Compact/Multi State Licensure Questions-Interested in Traveling

I am not familiar with how the State Boards of Nursing that are Compact/Multi License States work. If someone can tell me a little more info on how it works that has had experiences with this I would appreciate.

Here is my situation and perhaps there is some good advice out there. I have a RN license in Iowa (compact state) and in Indiana (not compact but working on it). I live in Indiana so that is my "home state" is my understanding according to the Compact rules. My understanding is that I can hold both a single state license in these states because I live in a Non-Compact State.

I am interested in Traveling Nuring. So if I move my state of residence back to Iowa and get up housekeeping there and pay taxes and all that good stuff, would I then get a Compact State License through Iowa instead of a Single State License? Would I then be able as to sign up as a Traveling Nurse and travel to the 20 some Compact Nursing States under that Iowa license without getting a new license everytime I traveled to a new state to work so long as I stayed in one of the Compact participating states?

I would love to travel, but the thought of having to get a single state license in god knows how many states to work seems like a nightmare I simply do not want to face. If I understand things correctly if I move back to Iowa and get a Compact License I could then freely travel and work in those various compact states without all the nightmare of multiple single state licenses???

Can anyone further discuss this that has knowledge or experience with this? If my understanding is correct its a no brainer...move back to Iowa! I would appreciate some help, insight and advise on this one.

Also, if you have good recommendations for traveling nurse agency's that treat their people good and have good selections of assignments I would be interested in hearing those recommendations too.

If you are a resident of a compact state, you can work off that license in another compact state. You are still responsible for any specific CEUs that state you wish to work in requires.

Your state of residence must be part of the compact states, other wise you must buy a license...You are a resident of Indiana, you stated it is NOT compacted,so this means it is NOT part of the compact states and you must buy a license in any other state you wish to work. Yes, you can hold a license in as many states as you apply for and pay the $$$

Yes, If you move to Iowa(I have not checked, if it is compacted or not, so am going by your statement) and become a resident of that state then you will be a part of the compacts states and work in other compact states off the Iowa license, and you would still need to buy a license in any other state that is NOT compacted, for example--California.

For example, I am a resident of Arkansas, I can work in any state that is part of the compact act, as Arkansas is compacted. I still have to buy a license to work in CA or FL.
As for the various agencies, all have good and bad, keep a list of those you call and the answers they give you. When I am in CA I use Bryan Healthcare, there are many others, I've used Hospital Support in other areas too. Mike with Hospital Support appears to be honest and he usually pays well. You must call around and decide which will work best for you.There are over 300 agencies out there

The New Hampshire State Board of Nursing has a list of who is Compact State as of last February. I would check that list, and check with the individual State Boards. Of course, I would keep your present license up to date, just in case......

Colorado and Kentucky will become part of the compact act in either June or July 2007, NJ has been pending for years....
