Re: Attempts to Leave Emergency Room

I wish I could say that I was shocked by this article but sadly, I'm not. It's bad enough that crap like this happens but when it gets widely publicized, only band-aid solutions happen rendering no fix to the real problem. For example, in this case, do you think fining the hospital, paying damages to the victims family and terminating the particular nurses and doctors involved will make a difference in shoddy healthcare delivery? As if we don't already have enough bad press.

I wonder what Nurse Jackie would do...

I would also ask what else was going on at the time? I know that at times, and we, as staff, can't help it.

About a year ago a hospital in California was actually shut down after a woman who waited over 1o hours died in the ER waiting room. There was actually video of her lying on the floor and staff stepping over her.

This hospital had a lot of long term problems but this broke the camels back.
An undersevered community lost a hospital, a lady died died and her family got rich as a result.

System is SNAFU ( situation normal all F---- Up)

Excellent points made by both of you. What never gets out to the public is an accurate depiction of the circumstances that these awful things happen in.

Remember the trials and subsequent convictions of malpractice of the two nurses and one particular physician in New Orleans? It was all over treatment given to patients who were terminally ill and elderly during the worst of the Katrina aftermath; accusations of overdosing or euthanizing were made. I think the media were tuned in to the reality of the sitution and tried to shed light on those things but, the DA swooped in and made the kill and the medical commuity didn't stand up or implicate the surreal conditions that they were working in.

Bad things happen in medicine because of uncontrollable conditions but bad things happen because of bad providers too. It's unfortunate that the distinction isn't usually made for the public and this is when everyone loses.

Unhappy Re: Attempts to Leave Emergency Room

I've had my wow experiences at the ER. It helps when you have someone go with you to speak up in your behalf. After six or seven hours waiting, I've dragged myself back home. A wonder I didn't lose consciousness in the car driving back home. Told my landlord that if I was going to die, at least I could do it comfortably in my bed.
