Nursing school is nursing school. It's either a 2 year or a 4 year program. When you get out you need to find a hospital that has a residency in your chosen area..whether it be labor and delivery...or neonatal ICU. Pay scales don't depend on specialty...they depend on years of experience.
starting pay for my area (northwest) is about 21 to 23 dollars an hour..Hope this helps..

Laura's right, most nursing programs that will let you sit for boards and get licensed are 2-4 years.

You can browse http://www.4nursingschools.com for more info on schools.

Then it's a matter of finding someplace that will hire you either directly into where you're looking for (Labor/Delivery, Special Care Nursery, NICU, etc) or let you transfer into that area later.

Nurses typically earn $40,000-60,000/year as new graduates in the Northeast. I wouldn't worry about how much you'll make right now. It's better to find out if being a nurse is really what you want to do. Nursing will let you raise a family and pay the mortgage in most cases.

Though, it doesn't matter how much you're making, if you don't like it, you'll be miserable and looking to get out.
