Nurse.com - Daily News: Patients Dislike 'Elderspeak' University of Kansas School of Nursing researcher, Kristine Williams, RN, found Alzheimer's patients dislike patronizing communication, dubbed "elderspeak," from caretakers. Her research showed that when nursing home staff used inappropriate terms of endearment like "sweetie" or "dearie" or simplified "baby talk," the residents with dementia were twice as likely to be uncooperative as when they were spoken to in a normal adult tone. Resident reactions included pushing away, issuing threats, grabbing things, clenching their teeth, crying and screaming, and hitting and kicking. Williams' study is to be published in the American Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias. |
