New nursing school to open in El Paso

FYI: KVIA.com El Paso, Las Cruces - Weather, News, Sports - New nursing school to start in EP in January

EL PASO -- January 15th marks the start of a new nursing school in El Paso, and it's giving many in the medical field reason to celebrate.

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Anita Thigpen Perry School of Nursing will be El Paso's second nursing school to offer a four-year degree.
The program is being spearheaded by Dr. Josefina Lujan, who will serve as the school's founding dean.

The new nursing school adds to the Steven Foster Medical School and moves this medical community one step closer to becoming a university medical center along with Thomason Hospital.

School officials say the addition will provide another outlet to recruit nurses in our area and help with the nursing shortage crisis throughout our state.

Thomason CEO Jim Valenti was on hand Monday to offer a $750,000 check on behalf of Thomason as seed money for the nursing school.

Texas Tech nursing Josefina Lujan, who was named the new regional dean for the Anita Thigpen Perry School of Nursing at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, received a congratulatory hug from daughter Bertha Lujan and aunt Tita Lujan at the conclusion of a news conference Monday.

The school announced the expansion of its program to El Paso, which will begin in January and will offer a one-year degree in nursing to those who already have a bachelor's degree in other areas.

"It ushers in a whole new era for the nursing profession in El Paso," Lujan said, adding that this could be a first step to an eventual establishment of a full nursing program in El Paso.
