Jan. 1, 2005: Texas: Criminal checks lax in nursing, probe finds:"Many convicted of sex and drug offenses are still in the field, in violation of law. Scores of licensed nurses in Texas are convicted drug and sex offenders, and some of them are working in violation of state law, a newspaper investigation has found. An analysis by the Dallas Morning News found that 57 licensed Texas nurses are felony sex offenders, including 31 who are listed in the state sex-offender registry. About 140 nurses have felony drug records, and only about half of them hold current nursing licenses."

Don't hit the panic button. The percent of "offenders" is minimal when compared to the number of active licensed nurses. Nurses are human, and as such, they make mistakes, just like school teachers, police officers, etc.

Do the FBI finger prints rule this stuff out? The point isn't that nurse dont make mistakes, but they are guilty of falsifying an affidavit if they do not disclose prior convictions if asked to do so on an employment application. An employer has the right to set standards and depending on the setting not to hire sex offenders and drug offenders.

Hello Shelly,

I don't know of too many states that require fingerprinting to get a nursing license.

Most boards of nursing simply don't have the resources to do a national criminal background check, much less fingerprinting on each nurse.

They rely instead on Self-reporting, for initial licensure and at each renewal.

I think letting a known sex offender loose in a vulnerable patient hospital population is begging them to strike again.

I just wish there was a better system in place to catch them before they ever got there.

I was fingerprinted when I took boards and in a couple of different states to get my license

I know Illinois now fingerprints nurses before they take Boards. True, some people have 'minor' convictions, but there is a good chance for diversion, etc., out there.
