Stupid question?? Hi Everyone, I hope nobody thinks I'm stupid for coming to this section for this type of question. I don't know who else to ask other than nurses. I guess you all would know my answer. I'm 20 years old and my mom owns a store so I've been working for her for the past 2 1/2 years and I need a job that pays well. I'm not sure if I want to go to college at all or when. I'm still deciding. I was just wondering what kind of jobs I could get at a hospital with no college experience. I know the food service (bringing patients their food) but I'm sure there's some other things that they accept. If anybody knows I would really appreciate an answer. Thank You. Sara

Re: Stupid question?? Hi Sara! When I was 19 and 20 (Gosh, I sound old...I'm only mid twenties)I worked in an ER as a "patient rep". My job was mainly admissions. I typed up the initial ER admission form and then also got everything ready when the patients were going to be admitted into the hospital. I helped the nurses clean up when they were busy and filled out lab requests for the doctors, etc. It was a rural area and our ER wasn't really large or anything, just a small 75 bed facility with an ER in proportion to that...we had 7 exam rooms with one of them being a trauma room. So...it was small. But I learned so much working there! It helped me decide that I wanted to be a nurse, which is what I'm in school for now. You might enjoy something like this. The only thing you need to be aware of is that you might have to work a lot of hours. We were really understaffed and I usually worked at least one extra shift a week. I know that some hospitals offer part time positions though. Call the Human Resources office at local hospitals and ask if they have any positions open in admissions or medical records, something like that. I didn't make a ton of money, now! I made about $7 an hour and overtime was time and a half. But, it's better than min. wage! Good luck! Kristy

Re: Stupid question?? I agree with Kristy. I worked as a unit secretary in a 15 bed ER for 2.5 years. Helped me quite a bit in nursing school. But, you still get to see the other departments and what they do.
