    Howdy and a stupid question

    Hey there everyone-
I just found this site tonite, and am impressed by all the info on it!

I do have a question, though. I'm in CO and I'm getting mixed messages on what prereqs I need. I'm down with the A&P, micro, psych, but what else is REALLY needed? I'm trying to work at the same time, and will be paying for all this myself, God willing, so I'm not looking for any extra "fluff stuff".
Can anyone out there help me?

A wise person once said there are no stupid questions just inquisitive idiots. Just kidding and please don't think I'm calling you an idiot. Actually your question is pretty good. Prerec's largly depend on what type of nursing degree you are after. Associates RN or bachelor's degree. The best thing to do is make appoint's with the counselors of the colleges you are considering then get a list of each schools specific requirements. Many schools are now requiring a class in critical thinking, as well a some humanities like english, history etc oh and don't forget algebra. Remember in highschool when you said "when am I ever going to use this" - well you do a lot of algebra in chemistry and drug calculations so it's best to be prepared.

    Hope this helps

As Hppygr8ful said requirements are different. First you should decide what type of program/degree you want and then check out the websites of schools you are interested in attending - most schools list the requirements and provide you with additional info such as cost and program length.

Hi there, i'm a freshman nursing student in a Associates RN program. Take my advice, whether A&P is to be completely before you enter the program or not, I would suggest taking it before. Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 are both very difficult and involve alot of time and if you're going to be working full time or close to in order to pay for school... you may just want to get those out of the way. Other than that, in my school, the prerecs were English (a lit and composition course (101, 102)), two social sciences (psychology, sociology) and math at a Pre-calc level. Every program is different though, so talk to an advisor or e-mail the nursing department. Best of luck to you!

Like everyone else I would say check with a nursing advisor and make sure it is an instructor or someone who actually knows the program. I know of some colleges that the advisors don't always know what classes are required and students end up taking the wrong ones and can't get into their nursing classes.

I would also recommend (if financially possible) to take a semester of prereq's and other classes such as your A&P and english before taking your nursing classes. This just makes less classes for you to take with your nursing classes and therefore takes the load off and makes it easier (if thats possible) for you to focus on your nursing classes. This is the route I went (took prereqs and other classes for 1 semester before my nursing classes) and I found it worked well. I couldn't imagine going the route they had worked out with semesters with 16-18 credit hours.
