Then I take it you will be going to nursing school and become a nurse so you will really know what you are talking about. Knowing what a few people tell you about not liking a job doesn't make it all the facts. Why would I want to change my job when I like it. I've worked in more then one area of nursing and liked them all. Sure there are days that suck but overall it's good. So I should join the members of the ***** and moan club? Yes I did see Norma Rae, I also was a teamster for 9 years before I was a nurse and again I say nursing is still better then any day I had in that factory which did pay well.. my 20 yr old son works there now making good money and my ex husband has been there 29 years and it's for him.
There are threads on here about nursing unions maybe you should check them out.
Why don't you go advocate for better pay for teachers, police, firemen etc and go protest the Screen Actors Guild for Actors getting paid millions.

Re: Cant take it anymore SOMETHING BETTER CHANGE SOON or I'll change it myself!

There are too many nursing jobs out there to be miserable. I will say every job has good and bad. You just have to find the one you can live with. I have been a nurse for 22 years.....I still LOVE nursing. Unfortunately, there are more bad bosses than good ones in the nursing field. For me a good manager/director is the key to my job satisfaction.

Thank God for Buddhism!!!!!!
I think we all need to meditate There are days I wonder what the heck I went into nursing for. Today was one of those days.
Is everyone half nuts or what?? Patients were screaming, throwing things and just plain nasty today to everyone.Lately my staff have been spending alot of time in tears from the patients. The kicker is, it is not the ones in pain or very sick.Just the ones who demand constant attention and freak out if they don't get it. My nickname is Linus. Does anyone ever want to just tell a patient to go FWERERHTHFS^$%#!)!!!???

How to tell the difference between a Graduate Nurse and an Experienced Nurse:

A Graduate Nurse throws up when the patient does.
An experienced nurse calls housekeeping when a patient throws up

A Graduate Nurse wears so many pins on their name badge you can't read it.
An experienced nurse doesn't wear a name badge for liability reasons

A Graduate Nurse charts too much.
An experienced nurse doesn't chart enough.

A Graduate Nurse loves to run to codes.
An experienced nurse makes graduate nurses run to codes.

A Graduate Nurse wants everyone to know they are a nurse.
An experienced nurse doesn't want anyone to know they are a nurse.

A Graduate Nurse keeps detailed notes on a pad.
An experienced nurse writes on the back of their hand, paper scraps, napkins, etc.

A Graduate Nurse will spend all day trying to reorient a patient.
An experienced nurse will chart the patient is disoriented and restrain them.

A Graduate Nurse can hear a beeping I-med at 50 yards.
An experienced nurse can't hear any alarms at any distance.

A Graduate Nurse loves to hear abnormal heart and breath sounds.
An experienced nurse doesn't want to know about them unless the patient is symptomatic.

A Graduate Nurse spends 2 hours giving a patient a bath.
An experienced nurse lets the CNA give the patient a bath.

A Graduate Nurse thinks people respect Nurses.
An experienced nurse knows everybody blames everything on the nurse.

A Graduate Nurse looks for blood on a bandage hoping they will get to change it.
An experienced nurse knows a little blood never hurt anybody.

A Graduate Nurse looks for a chance "to work with the family."
An experienced nurse avoids the family.

A Graduate Nurse expects meds and supplies to be delivered on time.
An experienced nurse expects them to never be delivered at all.

A Graduate Nurse will spend days bladder training an incontinent patient.
An experienced nurse will insert a Foley catheter.

A Graduate Nurse always answers their phone.
An experienced nurse checks their caller ID before answering the phone.

A Graduate Nurse thinks psych patients are interesting.
An experienced nurse thinks psych patients are crazy.

A Graduate Nurse carries reference books in their bag.
An experienced nurse carries magazines, lunch, and some "cough syrup" in their bag.

A Graduate Nurse doesn't find this funny.
An experienced nurse does

Re: Cant take it anymore SOMETHING BETTER CHANGE SOON or I'll change it myself!

i worked in one psych hosptial that i got tired of working in because the moral was so low. i think the moral was low because the staff of the psych hospital didn't really believe in what is termed mental illness - or what the insurance companies will pay for. all the staff believed in schizophrenia as a "real" disease but when it came to borderline personality disorder or chemical dependency - most of the staff didn't believe these to be "real" diseases. most of the staff viewed these people as drama queens/kings, immature, manipulative, irresponsible, needy, lazy, etc. so when half of the population you're "treating" falls into the latter category - you can imagine how low the moral is because of how the staff view the patients. how you view your enviroment is very important. even some of the psychiatrist had the latter view. it's rediculous to "treat" somebody when you don't even view them as being diseased. so i think people went to work feeling like they were just doing "idiot" work and moral got low. if you're going to go into psych you must believe the people you "treat" actually have a disease.

You know I've done a lot of nursing jobs and am now in psych - honestly I couldn't imagine doing anything else at this point. I love my job, my patients and most of my co-workers. Your right about some people in psych though. In all areas of nursing but especially in psych a person unable to show compassion for the plight of their patient really needs a non-patient care position. I've done that too but missed the human contact. I am often in charge of 18+ patients and I always make it a point to know everyone's name and illness. Psych patient more than any other need to be treated with respect. It way to easy to dismiss them as "crazy" when in reality they are just out of touch. Borderlines and addicts and alcoholics almost always have a
parity diagnosis such as Major depression, Bi-polar, schizoaffective etc..and while borderline behaviors is often the most difficult behavior to deal with often if you approach by treating the parity the borderline improves.

When it comes to staff - I have no tolerance for those who cannot show compassion and respect for their patients. I'll give you an example - I came in one Monday (I usually don't work weekends) to find that a patient who came in late the Friday before was going off and was about to be in a "Take Down situation" Which is not the way I want to start my day. This Patient was a true borderline (Histrionic). She was screaming and refusing to take her medication and running arround the unit. No less than 5 people were trying to bring her under control. AS Charge is was my call - so I told everyone to back off and let me see if she would talk to me. I approached her in a nonthreatening manner and simply Said "You seem to be very upset and could I help her?" She stated to me "Everybody treats me like I'm crazy and they keep calling me sweetheart!" I asked he what she would like to ce called she said My name is Miss (Name omiited for HIPPA) nad please say it with respect and I am a Southern Lady!" Once the the ground rules were set she was very cooperative and improved. Treating someone with respect is such a small thing. My DON told me the other day that when I am on shift there are fewer patients given Emergency Medication. I like that. My goal each day is to go home knowing that I have done the best job I can for my patients. I don't worry so much about my employer because I know If I do the first part the second takes care of itself! The only other area of nursing I'd go back too now is L&D. I am taking classes now to become a Psychiatric Patient Advocate.

Peace and Namaste

Re: Cant take it anymore SOMETHING BETTER CHANGE SOON or I'll change it myself!

it's just so ridiculous at that place. it's like if these people aren't diseased then why are they hospitlaized? isn't that fraud? i remember being interviewed at the childrens hospital and they said they'll call you names - and i said well that's because they're sick - and they said - no they're not sick. i was thinking in my head then why are they hospitalized? they have a commercial that runs locally. in the commercial they should be honest - we'll label you with a disease but we'll really think you're just a whiney, needy, immature, stupid person. how's that old joke go - the inmates running the asylum.
