What is a Nurse.

I know it seems that everyone wants to go into Nursing now.... And honestly
the bottom line is the money.... This is sad. The bottom line should be the
quality of nursing care the patient receives.

What I can not understand why nurse feel that they even look like Nurses.
They have long hair hanging down to the shoulders.
Dangling Ear rings, numerous rings on all the fingers, highly polished finger
nails scrubs that look like they could be anything from the cleaning lady to
a Lab Tech.
And a big problem now in hospitals is infection control- you can not have
infection control and dress like you are going out on the town in your rings
and hanging down hairdos.
On ring ( Wedding , of course thisis not done any more) and a simple
watch is all you should wear
A crisp pressed White uniform and white shoes that are not have caked
with direct and mud give you a more professional look and the patients
would respect you ....
The I went to Nursing school we wear a blue uniform and even a cap so
people knew we were students. We graduated to the honor of wearing the
white uniform.
Now everyone is going to nursing school dressed like fashion statement
lacking infection control measures just to make the big dollar......
It is time nursing takes a stepback and looks at quality of nurses who are
coming out of nursing school. I would rather have a few good nurses than
to have a bunch of over paid , people with nursing as a glamour job.... it
not. It is not fun holding a dying person hand . Or seeing a child who was
beaten by a parent.... Let these people at least in their time of need see
People who are not in the profession for the money, who have neat uniforms
on and no gross jewelry. .... that is what a nurse is and how they should
look.

Re: What is a Nurse.

Anybody who thinks they are going to make a lot of money in patient care nursing has paid attention to the news. Most staff nurses are overworked and underpaid for what they do. I have worked in many facilities including one where we wore whites. at the end of a busy shift they had blood stains, wrinkles and sweaty armpits. The use of caps in the hospital setting was done away with because they presented a severe infection control hazard.
If a facility is allowing it's nurses to ware long hair down and long polished nails then they are in direct violation of JACHO standards. I currently work in psych and WE don't ware uniforms as it causes the patients to become aggitated which is the last thing anybody wants. My grandmother who was a nurse wore a uniform that weighed 14lbs. The era of the starched white uniform is over. I don't ware my hospital shoes anyware but the hospital. They go into the trunk of my car in a plastic bag. The hospital floors are covered with microbes and I don't want to bring that into my home.

A nurse can look and act professional without being in a starched white uniform. Have you ever had to climb on a moving guerney to do CPR in a skirt. It's just not practical.
