BSN vs ASN

Hello

I'm Chester, 22 years old, I'm from Philippines. I'm already graduate at BSmarketing. Since that my family business isn't that profitable anymore and my Aunt from Florida wants me to proceed nursing due to financial stability so i planned to take nursing as my carrier. This April(2005) im planning to take a ASN course under the (Philippine Paramedical Technical School)PPTS school, I'm just wondering what is the difference of ASN from BSN? Is there a task that ASN can't do compare to BSN? Can anyone stress out some points that ASN and BSN differs? All i know is that BSN is 4 years and ASN is 2 years course and don't have research subjects but when comes to major subjects and clinical requirements its totally the same.

And one thing my school got a course so called "Surgical technologist". I thought for a while after you pass the NCLEX-RN and get a license for RN you can legally and capable to assist the surgeon? Do i need another 1 year inorder to assist the surgeon? I really want to be a surgical nurse or OR nurse.

Lastly, im little bit confuse because here in Philippines we only practice RN and Nursing Aide. We don't have LPN's. The only way to become a nurse is to go for 4 years BSN course. But right now PPTS,US base curriculum and team up with California Paramedical School, was formed and the only pioneer school here in Philippines that offers CNA(3mos) -> LPN(15mos) down to RN(2years) and im impress the way they invited Gregory Howard, CGFNS president, to be there commencement speaker during graduation of there first batch. So thats the reason i choose this school.

thanks i hope someone will response to my questions, sorry im kinda confuse due to difference practice here in Philippines and in USA.

PS: I really want to talk to a practice Nurse in States! any help can do. Kindly contact email me or PM me at this address. I highly appreciate if someone helps me. Thanks

Re: BSN vs ASN

Hello Chester,

Can't respond to your ASN vs BSN question because I don't know what will be accepted if you were to come into the USA to work.

Will the ASN course be accepted along with the CGNFS and TOEFL, as qualification to take the USA NCLEX Licensure examination? You'll need to find the answers before you decide what course to take.

For working in the Operating Room, you can do that with a basic RN license and on the job training. Most hospitals will train you in the OR if that is what you want to do.

Wish you luck,

Re: BSN vs ASN

Yep we need to pass those exams the CGFNS, TOEFL, TSE, TWE for VISA screening actually sir Mr. Gregory howard is the commencement speaker in the first batch of my school.

Yep we will get the NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-LPN(if we want lpn).

Another question:

1. Is Mr. Gregory Howard the current CGFNS president?

2. Our school got a review center for NCLEX-RN. The review center is www.eriworld.com, my question is you heard that review center?

TY for replying my post

Re: BSN vs ASN

Chester,

Kumusta pare? I'll try to answer some or most of your questions.

- "I'm just wondering what is the difference of ASN from BSN? Is there a task that ASN can't do compare to BSN?"

there are not a lot of differences between the two. you can work as a staff nurse with either degree. however, if you want a managerial or education position - you must have your bsn.

- "Do i need another 1 year inorder to assist the surgeon? I really want to be a surgical nurse or OR nurse."

just like the other guy said, once you have your nuring license you can work in the OR. surgical techs have a totally different job description. they take care of the instruments, etc.

hope this helps. if you have other questions just ask. have a great day.

Re: BSN vs ASN

Get your ASN over there then come here and if you are eligible, get your BSN as soon as possible.

You want to move up the nursing career ladder, BSN is your entrance pass.

If you have a Master's in Nursing, even better.

Re: BSN vs ASN

I watched an LPN climb the ladder in a nursing home, with each step she took she changed by the time she got to the top ( and I mean top) an executive position she was no longer energetic, caring person. She turned into a gossiping witch.
