| Re: Am I too old?? Too old? I don't think so. I'm 37 years old. Two of my nursing school peers are 44 and 52. I've worked for an Oil Company for 3 years, and I've been working for a hospital for 16 years as a a System Analyst. I had a Computer Science Certification and Associates in Business and decided after 12 years of working for the hospital that I wanted to be an RN. So I talked to my VP, applied for the RN program and started my prereqs. Before I knew it I was in the program and working towards my RN. As of 12/22/2005, I will be a new graduate of Nursing School. I say YOU'RE NEVER TOO OLD to start something new. Once you learn it and earn it they can't take it away from you. Do it, try it and if you like it I don't think you'll think your too old anymore. I've known people that started nursing school in their 50's and loved it, it was what they were supposed to do, it was just at an earlier age they weren't ready, in their 50's they were ready. So your ready at 40, go it for. GOOD LUCK! ![]() |

| Re: Am I too old?? I'm so glad to read this thread and all of your wonderful comments. I am 44 and just received my CNA certificate which is a requirement here before you can apply for nursing school. I was, without a doubt, the oldest in my CNA class and have been concerned about being too old to start a nursing career. Thanks! |

| Like they say, you're only as old as you feel. My mother yearned to be a nurse since high school. But love, marriage and the baby carriage got between her and her goal. I saw her become an RN at 50 and had a tremendous 20 year career!!!! Her life was changed. She was happier, more confident and self reliant. She says that she finally realized and lived her dream. How many people can say that. She still chomps at the bit to get back into it, but health keeps her down now. Through this she inspred me to do the same. I have now had a 20 year career and it was her courageous example that gave me inspiration. Never give up on your dream. It will take you places you have never been as well as be an absolutely brilliant inspiration to your children and family. Go get what you want. nightnurse85 |

| Re: Am I too old?? I am in LPN school now, 2nd semester. I just turned 45 and we even have a couple in the program who are 50. So you are definately not too old. In fact at one of our clinical orientations we were told that the average age of nurses right now is 45 years old. So come on and join us "old folks" LOL> I think you will find you will fit right in. | I'm 43 and I'm in my LPN year. I graduate in Aug. I was scared to go back to school but I was amazed once I started to find that half my class was my age. Funny thing is my closest friends ended up being in their early 20's. I have loved going back to school and learning a whole new career, but I warn you, it is a challenge. I eat, breathe, and sleep nursing. I study all the time and feel guilty when I'm not studying. My family was put on the back burner and it's been very hard. But we all know in the long run it will be worth it. So, if you have a husband and kids, just make sure they are in full support of you going back to school. Then hang on for the ride of your life and enjoy every moment of it!!! |
