what should I choose??? Advice please!!

Hello I am a current RN living in Kentucky. I was arrested back in Nov for attempting to obtain controlled sub through fraud. Basically I tried to call in my own prescription for lortab. Needless to say I got arrested and the charge was diverted. So that is all taken care of. The BON offers a KARE program where you basically have to jump through hoops for 5 years and lose your narcotic dispensing priveleges which means I will lose my current ICU job (which I love!!!!). My question is this...What if I say no to that program, does anyone know what the discipline would be? I never stole from work or bought off the streets, always my own but I got a wild hair and decided to call it in myself!! If I am going to lose my job anyway should I just let them discipine me and recover on my own terms instead of being forced through programs which may not work for me??? Please help.

If you were desperate enough to break the law and call in your own script, then I highly doubt that you will be able to "recover on your own." I'm not in recovery, but my view is this: Why not take advantage of the resources you're being offered? Recovery is not something you should be attempting to do on your own- you'll need the support & encouragement of others who have been through the same stuff as you.

Here in NJ we didn't have an alternative program untill 2004. I am so very grateful we do my opinion is if you can qualify for a diversion program ..DO IT.. might be more hoops to jump through but in the long run I think it will be worth it .

I would work with the State Board program, primarily because they do have the final say as to your license. If the program doesn't 'work', then try something else with the Board's approval.

Why would any of us here know what the KY BON requires? Have you asked them what would happen if you didn't jump through their hoops?

Do you want to work again in an ICU?

You need to step down a couple of pegs and do what ya need to do here if you want the priviledge of working as an RN.

It's not a given.... I'd suggest a 12 step program in addition to whatever the board wants you to do.

And if you think that's easy you're mistaken. Your sponser (sp)will be on you like white on rice if he/she is any good.
