| Senior Member | sugar free products Does anyone have any info. about the sugar alcohols in sugar-free cookies and candy? I have been using them since last May as part of my low glycemic index eating plan..I lost 40 lbs (of course I was still drinking but only mixing with diet Coke..LOL) I went to the store yesterday to buy myself some cookies and I suddenly remembered the sugar alcohol in nutrition facts. I am not part of any monitoring program, but I don't want to continue to put alcohol into my body. I ate 4 of these cookies yesterday and this morning I woke up with the withdrawal hangover feeling..could this be from those cookies? or do you think it is just my continued withdrawal from my bender. I have been sober for 3 days..unless the cookies are a problem. I don't know much about sucralose or how it is metabolized but I know alot of you are very aware of all hidden forms of alcohol so could you help me out?

| Re: sugar free products I remember this subject coming up in my nurse support group several years ago. I recall reading that 'sugar alcohol', an ingredient often listed in chewing gum, would not translate into a etoh or positive etg reading on a urine screen. |

| Re: sugar free products I'm new to this site and am just cruising through the different forums and saw the title to this thread. I'm not in recovery (I don't drink), but thought I could help answer this question. I'm diabetic and currently reading a book on diabetic nutrition and just read a chapter about the different sorts of carbohydrates. "Sugar alcohol" is sort of a mis-nomer: these are carbs that can only be partially digested; and include such things as Sorbital, mannitol, xylitol, isomalt, and hydrogenated starch hydrolysates. Sugar alcohols are used in "sugar free" foods and produce a slower and lower rise in blood glucose levels than other sugars. They can cause GI symptoms (ie: stomach aches, excess gas); and can cause diarrhea if eaten in excess or in certain individuals). They wouldn't cause your hang-over feelings; but if you are hitting the low carb diet hard after a bender (with high carb intake for a while) it could contribute to the hangover feeling if you have had a big change in your blood sugar. |
