Interview tomorrow, please help!

Long story short, was a somewhat new nurse (3 years) last March. Working on a med-surg unit, never any problems or discipline. I was going thru a lot at home, husband with MS and sick, started therapy (to deal with past molestation and abuse) and was also started on Lexapro and Ambien. I worked midnights and some nights I'd go in on little sleep. A fellow nurse reported that I open handedly smacked a patient on the bottom while giving a bath and others reported I was acting strangely.. I was taken off the floor , drug tested (negative) and sent home, then fired. ( I subsequently had a panic attack d/t thinking that I wouldn't be able to support my husband and I and overdosed on Klonipin and spent 2 days in a psych unit then released) with no other psych problems.......The past employer reported it to the ohio board of nursing. I got a new job and worked their almost a year (as a RN) when the company changed owners I was fired! I am on Probation with the Board but don't really have any restrictions on my license other than being a travel nurse or being a supervisor. I have an interview tomorrow, I am paralyzed in fear to have to bring this probation up, but I also know I need to go to it and try my best.... Is there any chance I will get this job? Do people hire nurses on probation? My license is valid, just on probation, but I feel like I have a big mark on me and no one will want me. I know I need to act confident but I am scared out of my mind. Any suggestions for calming down or anyone with a similiar story please share. I have been out of work for 3 months and this is my first interview........ I need a job !!!

Psych facilities, SNF's and Addiction rehabs are your best bets - My first job in non-patient care was as admitting RN in a 96 bed acute psych facility. I ended up staying there for four years. Worked through all the conditions of my DIversion in one facility.

There are jobs out there - If your program requires you to be in a nurse support group and most do - find out where the other nurses in your group are working.

Peace and Namaste

Well the interview went well, she acted like I got the job, even said we'll see you in orientation, BUT I DIDN'T GET IT. Still fighting for unemployment, thinking were going to have to file bankruptcy Trying to apply for jobs but there is not a lot of open RN positions in my area. I don't have any narcotic restrictions, I can't believe this has been so hard!

You state you don't have narcotic restrictions but do you have a record on your license. If you do this may be holding you up. You say there are not a lot of RN positions in your area. Are you ina small town or subburb? Perhaps branching out to a larger hospital or area would help. MOst places I know are just begging for qualified RN's. One thing I have found helpful for folks in our situation is to be really honest and up front. The law doeasn't require you to tell that you are an addict in recovery but many employers who may like you will feel betrayed when they get your background check and will not hire based on the fact that youe "Lied" during your interview.

I don't know where you live but I would definately try psych hospitals, drug rehabs, and SNF for you first job out of the gate. Do it for a couple of years and then go back to what you love if you can.

Last year when I was still working for the psych hospital I decidede that since my DIversion program was finished and I had no marks on my license - I would go back to labor and delivery. I went and applied at the local hospital had very good interview - was even honest about my history. THe DON was very positive said she would get back to me. She called me later that day and told me that because I was working for one of Their hospitals when I got into trouble (I stole a vile of benedryl in order to kill myself) I was permanantly not eligible for rehire at any of their hospitals. That was a huge blow to me. But shortly thereafter I found that GOD was once again providing for me. Three weeks later I interviewed for the job I have today.
Doing homecare for developmentally disabled adults in the community setting.

Things have a way of working out exactly as they should - bu you do have to trust in your creator on this.

Peace and Namaste
