Do you feel other nurses have supported you?

Just something I was wondering...Do you feel you have been supported by other nurses in your recovery? In my 14 year nursing career I have often observed that nurses are not as supportive of each other as say, Doctors, are. Do you agree? Would be interested in reading your thoughts on this one. Thank you all!

Re: Do you feel other nurses have supported you?

I hate to say this but we as nurses do not support each other in any thing that we do. If we know that someone has a problem most of the time we keep our mouth shut until management or the BON has taken action. I have been a nurse for almost thirty years and to this day I have never seen us support each other.

Yes I feel supported by my peers. I have a great employer with a soft spot for nurses in recovery We probably have 15 nurses here who are either in diversion or on probation. I am fortunate in this regard.

Peace and Namaste

Re: Do you feel other nurses have supported you?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I think the previous two posts have validity. My personal experience has, for the most part, been one of acceptance and encouragement from other nurses. When I was diverting over 4 years ago, it was another nurse who discovered it and turned me in. Two of my best friends, nurses I worked with, told me they knew about it but were afraid to confront me. I don't think it would have changed anything if they had; I was simply not ready to quit.
I have been back to patient care for over one year and the support I have received from my current nurse manager has been overwhelming. I would really like to educate other nurses about what diversion is like. So few nurses really know much about the program. I think if people knew about it in more detail perhaps it might dissuade someone from making my mistake and for those with addiction issues maybe it would let them know there is a alternative program within their profession.
