| One cranky cat | Re: Unsure male student Kevin, in no way did I say women had trouble from 'all' male P. O.'s. Please do not read into the post. Thanks! Unfortunately, there are some people whatever profession they are in that are like that. 'Cat'

| Re: Unsure male student Dude......... Jump in, the water is fine! There will always be the people that assume because you "own" a penis you will be looked at differently. Believe me, the most probs you will have is that your lower back muscles are definitly stronger than some of the fems (not all to be sure), there will always be the older nurses, male and female, that want you to prove yourself.......... but how is that different from any other job? WE are in the business of CAREING, helping those that cant help themselves. By GOD, if I am having a AMI, I want someone capable, whether they have a penis or not! Should I do something stupid and fracture something important, I want someone that knows how to apply a splint! Study your books, Apply yourself, be confident in your skills, the patients will know who is good and who is not......... Its all that matters! clem |

Word of caution. Please, read carefully to what you reply to and quote. Cat was not being negative towards her male nurse peers, whatsoever. I can see how female LEOs being the minority gender faces similar issues as do male's being the minority gender in nursing. Again, Cat never used the word "all", therefore please read more carefully.

| Re: Unsure male student WOW...what a great topic. I'm starting a nursing program in Denver this fall (maybe in the Pacific NW if I get accepted) and had really begun to have doubts about my career change...due to some discussions happening on another board. I was reading some of the threads about nurses "eating their young" and making false and malicious complaints about other nurses, etc etc etc... I've worked as a flight attendant for 20+ years. It's not LE, but it's getting pretty close these days...the security issues, threats of terrorism, crazy passengers, etc etc. I've been working hard the past 2 years on pre-reqs and have really been anticipating this change. Just turned 50, starting all over, and now feeling pretty good about it again after reading this thread. Thanks everyone! |

| Re: Unsure male student LT......as a fireman, paramedic, and nurse I can say this with certainty. Dont worry about it. Just study hard, learn as much as you can and do the job. In my experience no one really cares as to what gender you are, just how well you perform. I think it is we cops and firemen that still have the gender bias as to women in the public service field, not that they dont know what they are doing, and time and time again they prove that they can do the job just as well as men. Just that they old traditions say that women cant. I think we both know that is a dated way of thinking. I havent really noticed that kind of bias in the nursing field towards men.......yet, Im new. You may feel alittle uncomfortable in the OB/GYN setting, so dont go that route, pick something like ER, Critical Care, etc. that you like. Its a wide open field. Good luck Mike |

| Re: Unsure male student Lt., Fresh out of nursing school and into the med/surg environment. No probs what-so-ever. The female nurses that I work with now and those that I had to work with in clinicals seem/ed to like having a guy around (especially if they have a heavy patient or one who is combative). I treat my co-workers with respect and so far have gotten the same back from them. I don't find that Doc's treat me any different than the female nurses either. Just my .02. Craig |

| Re: Unsure male student what year was this posted? 1986? i think things are much less gender biased today than years past. im a future nursing student 43 yr old, gonna start prereqs this summer on the paramedic to RN fastrack. i think ten yrs ago certain jobs were gender skewed. i dnt see this now. there are many many female fire fighters i come in contact wth every day, female police officers and at my current job in EMS the paramedics are probably 60/40 female/male. as far as Male RNs getting crap from the female ones i dnt see it. and it seems if u r worried about female domination u might try the ER as there seem to be quite a few males there. personally wth my army background (20 yrs, retired) i saw a lot more female bashing. oncce people see u can perform all that bias crap gets left behind no matter what gender/color/ religion/sexual orientation u r. personally i cant wait to get them white hose on wth the line dwn the back and that lil white hat. we all get those rght?http://forums.nurses-forum.com/images/smilies/houra.gif :houra: peace out.
