Nursing and Science

I posted a few questions is the "male nurses" section. I have yet another question. I am 31, thinking of going in to nursing. However, I would like to prepare for the science courses BEFORE actually starting nursing. I am really into homeschooling and believe I can studay by myself well. What science courses do RN's need? Biology, Chemistry? Math? Are those the basics? Most universities don't give a listing of required courses online. Could anyone enligthen me?

Thanks!
Trevor

Re: Nursing and Science

I'd skip the homestudy and get on with the classes Trevor.

The sciences you'll be studying at home may get you a higher GPA, but they won't make you any better of a nurse. Most of sciences are "core" classes that weed out the people that shouldn't be going into Nursing or the Health Professions.

The Math and Biology that you need for Nursing you'll learn when you get into a formal Nursing program.

In my program, long as you passed the remedial math test on admission, you had a one credit "Math For Pharmacology" course to complete and that was it for Mathematics.

If you want to get a Chemistry book and start memorizing the periodic table, it'll get you a few extra points when yu take the class. If they have study guides that accompany the text books, they might help you focus in on what's pertinent.

Re: Nursing and Science

Are you looking at the websites thoroughly? All of the schools I had looked at had the requirements clearly posted. They spelled it out, you need to have these classes in order to apply. If not, you can call the nursing department of the school you are interestd in. The prerequisites vary by school. Of course some classes are standard: physiology, pscyh, nutrition, anatomy, microbiology, chem I, biology. Some as you can see from th earlier posts require way more, depends on the school and whether it's an ADN or BSN program. Good Luck!
