Psychiatric Hospital
Typical day- I work nightshift in the adolescent and childrens units. I check medication and other orders from the previous day, flow charts, pour and pass meds in the am, assess for side effects of medications and to see if the medications are helping, Vital signs, Use a lot of therapeutic communications when patients are having problems w/ anxiety, depression, hallucinations, etc., break up fights, make rounds w/ the docs in the am, and a whole bunch of other fun stuff!

Having family members w/ mental illness gave me the experience and insight to help the mentally ill.

Skills that are important- I would say therapeutic communication and listening skills.

I learned to use these skills in nursing school and on the job.

I have an associates degree which took 2 years to obtain. Before that I was an LPN (diploma) which took 15 months.

Taking Biology, Algebra, Chemistry and Health would be very helpful in high school.

You will need to obtain a minimum of an associates degree for this position. (2 years)

I like to listen to people's problems. It makes me feel good to know that I am there to listen, when the patients may not have anyone in their life who cares about them.

The hardest part about the job is leaving it at the door. I tend to feel bad for the kids who don't really have anyone to love them. It's also difficult to deal w/ the behaviors that the kids have, related to the abuse that they suffered in the past.

I believe that jobs like this are slowly being phased out due to the fact that the government is decreasing funding for the mentally ill. Most of the mentally ill don't have their own insurance or jobs.

I make $14.00/hr plus $0.75 shift differential. This is in PA.

I wouldn't change anything. I love my job.

What motivates me is when I can help a patient to get better and see them leave the hospital.

I get excited when there is a fight, but not a good kind of excited. It's more like an adrenaline rush when you are scared.

It takes a very flexible and accepting personality to work in psychiatric nursing. If you are very ridgid or judgemental, the patients will not open up to you.

other comments-
It is required to work weekends and holidays. that may be a determining factor for you.

Typical day:
1. Open unit and prepare for patient arrival. This includes checking crash cart, accucu-check machine, refrigerator and heater logs, adn doing a narcotic count.
2. Begin patient care, pre-operative care, staging adn post-operative care as needed.
3. Fill out patient logs; make call backs to check patient progress for the patients who had been seen the day before.
4. Narcotic count for end of day.
5. Restock pre-op, post-op and procedure areas for next day.
6. Check supplies in stock room and order accordingly.
7. Lock down all medications, supplies and areas.

Helped most: experience (learning from 27 years of working as a nurse), obtaining my critical care certification

2 skills used most: assessment and critical thinking skills

Learned: experience and continuing education

Education: RN license and BSN

Highschool ed needed: preferably academic courses with an emphasis on human sciences

Post highschool ed: Accredited nursing school (may be a 2 or 4 year program), must then sit for nursign boards and pass them. Annual continuing education credits required by the state of licensure to renew license.

Like most: Flexibliity and being able to help people

Most difficult: must work holidays, weekends and various times of the day; taking care of families as well as the patient

Future: Excellent if new nurses are willing to work their feet to the bones, for lousy working conditions and decent pay!!

Salary: Beginning $15-17/hr at top of scale $25-30/hr that's for full-time with benifits

Change?: No way, after 27 years, lots of lousy hours and the same pay scale for the past 15 years....I love being a nurse!!

Motivates: Being able to make a difference (hopefully positive) in a persons life

Excited: contact with the various people I have contact with each day

Personality: strong, independent,
