SUMMARY:
Under indirect supervision, provides primary care, assessment, and evaluation to critically and/or chronically ill newborn infants. May provide care for critically ill newborns during air and ground transport from urban and rural hospitals. May serve in a teaching capacity and/or may supervise clinical and support staff in patient care activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides direct in-house assessment, evaluation, and primary patient care to critically or chronically ill infants within a specified patient care facility, either within the HSC (level I, II, or III nurseries) or in community level I or II nurseries.
Provides direct patient management in collaboration with Neonatologists; participates in daily rounds, patient assessment, and care plan development.
Provides direct critical patient care during the air and/or ground transport of critically ill infants to the patient care facility from urban and rural hospitals/referral centers.
Performs various procedures including, but not limited to, intubation, insertion of umbilical lines, arterial sticks, PICC's, lumber punctures, chest tubes, and venipuncture.
Attends high-risk deliveries for intensive care, resuscitation, and stabilization.
Guides and educates pediatric residents, medica students, and other health care providers in patient care procedures; may provide outreach education within the community and state.
Maintains established institutional policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, and safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field/Graduate of accredited NNP program with 1 to 3 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

State of New Mexico Licensed Registered Nurse; State of New Mexico Certified Nurse Practitioner; CPR Certified; State of NM Contolled Substance License.

Successful candidate must submit to post offer, pre-employment physical examination/medical history check; may be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening; UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
Knowledge of patient care requirements of at-risk newborns.
Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Knowledge of neonatal transport procedures, standards, facilities and equipment.
Skill in performing clinical and medical procedures.
Knowledge of midwifery theory, procedure and standards.
Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in area of expertise.
Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
Light physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
