Need Help

After all these years (I'm 52) I decided to get my BSN.
More and more I'm coming to the conclusion that the "BS" part is just that. I've been a nurse for almost 30 years and I never heard of the stuff they're telling us is important.
Anyhow, I'm totally bummed out because I have to do this thing on Dorthea Orem and why human beings need food and water...........any insights?
I'll love ya forever

Re: Need Help

Hi Anonymous..
Love your chosen handle, but why not join us & register? We're a friendly bunch.. I promise! *grin* Well, about the BS you're putting up with to get your BSN degree. It IS hard to swallow when you're older and wise enough to see it for being as silly as it really is.. but, remember the dumb things you had to take or study when you got your ADN degree? Just have to keep in mind that the university has to "fluff up" its courses to seem more "academic" and to meet some arbitrary requirements about number of hours spent in class etc.. Its sort of like suffering through college algebra.. never ever have I had to use it (except figuring dopamine drip rates and I use a calculator for that) but had to pass the course all the same.

Just try to keep your cool, don't let yourself stress out over the little things and you'll make it through..

even though that report on "why human beings need food and water" should take a prize in the "stupidest" category! *LOL*

Best of luck to you and let us know how it's going ok? Drop on back even if you just need to vent! ((HUGS))

Re: Need Help

Hi Andrea,
Please consider registering and joining us....we're a warped bunch and help keep each other sane!

I'm originally a diploma grad so I find LOTS of this stuff unreal! Just resign yourself to jumping throught the hoops and you'll make it.

My first theory assignment was on the menstral cycle...now that was BAD!!!!!

Dorthea Orem is a nursing theorist. Go to any med library and get a book on nursing thoerists,or CHIDAL through your school should be able to help. I do have a 2 pg summary or her basic theory that I could send along if you could use it.Her's is regarding the self-care deficit.

Hope this helps.

Re: Need Help

Hello Andrea,

Regarding your feelings about getting your BSN, no it won't make you a better nurse. I said that before and after I got my BSN (just about one week before I was forty) and I still say it. It did, however, open new avenues for me. I have now been a nurse practitioner for over 25 years. One of the best personal and professional decisions I ever made.

Regarding Dorothea Orem's Self Care theory: Think of it as the precursor to Restorative Care. Same thing. I was just thinking up a new exercise about restorative care and I will send them on an internet search for Orem.

Hope this helps,
