Re: how to be a nurse administrator I'm sorry to tell you this, but nobody becomes a top executive without working their way up (unless daddy owns the company and is foolish enough to stick junior in the President's position without experience). Nobody became a CEO without education and experience in various positions below that first. If you are more interested in hospital administration than in nursing you might consider a Bachelor degree in business administration or finance followed by a Master's degree in Health Services Administration. That educational pathway would place you on the employment track towards having the ability to work in administration and if you're good to work your way up to become a hospital administrator or a CEO of some large health care corporation someday. If nursing is your primary passion and you would like the ability to move from hands on staff nursing to nursing administration down the road then I would recommend you go to college to get a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree as a start, with additional course work in management, business classes, finance etc. Time, experience, and perhaps further education will help you move along this career pathway. Is there a hospital nearby with a pediatric floor? You might want to call the nursing director of the pediatric floor and make an appointment to go visit. Perhaps you could spend some hours watching what a typical day in apeds unit is like. Then you could ask the unit director how he or she became the unit director. Then you could call a hospital administrator and make an appointment to go visit with one for a short interview.. and ask about that job, and their suggestions as to how you could best prepare for that career if you decided that's what you wanted to do.

Re: how to be a nurse administrator You're very welcome. If you go take a look at a peds unit, or talk with an administrator let us know what you think afterwards ok? Best wishes with whatever career path you eventually choose!

Re: how to be a nurse administrator I certainly agree with Sara about working your way up...and I certainly wouldn't want to work for you if you had no expereince under your belt. You wouldn't even know the "trials and tribulations" associated with the job. Good luck in your pursuit!
