Question ER Nursing w/ STD?

I'm trying to help my GF's 19 year old daughter to make wiser decisions. She was accepted into a Pre-Med program at a major univ. She wants ER/Trama Nursing. She graduates HS w/ her cna.

My question is:

If she contracts an STD during her youthful college exploits
how will this affect her career choice? Will it affect it all?

Being in college nowadays is very disturbing to me. W/ all the
crap I see in the media, ie...Girls Gone Wild, Reality TV...MTV... with the way they portray promiscious sex, I worry.

an STD won't cause her a problem in nursing...maybe in life.

Re: ER Nursing w/ STD?

An STD would not affect her ability to be a nurse, but an STD could leave her unable to have children or even, in the case of HIV/AIDS, kill her. It's important she know about these risks & the importance of using CONDOMS!

Smile Re: ER Nursing w/ STD?

Sorry I'm not a nurse. My GF's daughter is entering the field.
I'm concerned w/ her sexual behavior and how it might affect
her career choice. Working w/ patients if you have an std I thought was a no/no....but I guess that comes from my ignorance
of the medical field.

I have advised on condomn use for the past several years even buying them for her. Plus using B/C properly and avoiding the casual sex thing. Advising on using condoms even during oral encounters to avoid possibly contracting an std.

Thanks for your help.

OK Frog --

Your profile says that your Occupation is a Nurse - so now that that is cleared up.... Unless your GFs daughter is having sex with the patients, etc - then there should be no risk involved.

She is 19 - she's old enough to make her own decisions now and all you and mom can do is hope that the advice you gave her over the years has gotten through.... if not, then she'll learn one day...
Nursing makes you realize your own mortality.....:39:

Re: ER Nursing w/ STD?

Having a history of an STD is a non-issue as far as nursing goes. Unless she is HIV positive.

If she's 18 or 21 her personal choices are none of your business - especially if she's a nurse. She knows what she's doing and she doesn't need you to tell her it's wrong. She knows.

Re: ER Nursing w/ STD?

this is off topic...I don't want to sound rude but if she wants to be a NURSE, why is she in pre-med, not NURSING SCHOOL? These are not the same thing. IF she wants to do nursing that is what she needs to study.
