I would suggest checking with not only your BON, but your school, also. Your school may let you get through their program, but your State BON is a whole different ballgame. Good luck!

I agree; I seriously doubt anyone with a felony conviction can take the NCLEX... in any state. Before spending any more time & $$$ on college you better check with your state board of nursing.

Good luck!

Wink Re: can a drug felon be an RN

I think it largely depends in the nature of the felony ie simple possesion vs - manufacturing/selling, How that felony was ajudicated and the rules in your state. Let's take California for example - Your out one night at a party and get pulled over. As luck would have it you've been smoking pot and get caught with more than an ounce. You go to court plead guilty serve your sentence and never get into any trouble again.(ie never use pot again)

2 years later you decide to become a nurse you Go to school and apply to take the NCLEX. Most likely the board will want documention reguarding the conviction. If you have kept your nose clean they would likely let you take your boards if you pass and get a liscense and you have a past history of drug use you'll probably get put into diversion for 2 to 3 years so that they can monitor your body fliuds and make sure your not working under the influence.
You see it's all about you. If you still have any drug issues I would strongly suggest that you get treatment and have at least two solid years of program before attempting a nursing career.

I am a nurse in diversion and I would'nt wish it on my worst enemy- but I am sober today and have the nursing job of my dreams so that's what's important.

Peace and Namaste
