Norfolk State awarded grant for virtual program

Norfolk State University has a $2.1 million grant to develop a virtual nursing program.

Awarded by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, the grant will go toward development of Virtual Nurse, a computer-based simulation framework for nurse training.

According to NSU, the technology used to support VNurse includes realistic 3-D virtual environments and interfaces, computer-based Flash 2-D movies, video, simulated animations, verbal and visual instruction, and cues.

According to a statement, the simulation will provide a realistic, safe, repeatable training opportunity for many occupations. Research shows that new nursing graduates need more preparation in managing more than three patients at a time, pharmacology, and understanding the right circumstance in which to call a doctor.
