Need Suggestions for Group Teaching Project

Hey all,

I have a group project that needs a topic for presentation in my nutrition for nursing at the BSN level.

Not to get too much into the project guidelines, the meat is:

You will develop a Patient/Family education program as a group project working in groups of 4 to 5. Patient and patient populations have varying educational needs. Each group of students will develop a presentation for the class. This will include development of a patient or population-focused educational experience. Patient education should be guided by learning objectives and goals.

Just as a background the Suggested topics are:

1. Adult or childhood obesity
2. Diet and lifestyle changes for Type II diabetes
3. Diet and lifestyle changes for Cardiac disease
4. Diet and lifestyle changes for Renal Disease
5. Healthy eating for healthy babies (include pregnancy and infant feeding)
6. Healthy eating for healthy families
7. Adolescence and Eating Disorders
8. Gastric Bypass
9. Nutritional supplements
10. Dietary needs/changes of aging
11. or other topics as identified by groups and approved by the instructor

...sadly, I think I missed the boat on this one and it looks like I'm at suggested topic #11.

I'm here to see what other topics pertinent to the course anyone may have to offer!

Thanks in advance,

-Al

Re: Need Suggestions for Group Teaching Project

I had to do something like this in my nutrition class. My group did ours on renal disease. We explained what renal disease is, how it effects a person's life and developed a menu for them while explaining what foods they should avoid. I found the renal disease topic to be pretty easy.
As far as other topics, what about burn victims? What do they need in order to prevent infection and develop new skin growth? Or athletes? I see you have healthy babies but what about the mother and if she breastfeeds. Hope these help. Good luck!!

Thanks texasnurse!

I actually came up with:

Ethnic/cultural considerations in health and nutrition.

I think that will be interesting to do.

Thanks again though!

I did a group presentation on childhood obesity last year for a community class. This semester I did a presentation on How to Speak to Your Doctor for a group of eldery. There's a ton of info on both. If you want info on the latter I can email you some sources and powerpoint.

Re: Need Suggestions for Group Teaching Project

Mind you, I like the Type 2 Diabetes one. Remember that uncontrolled Diabetes and HTN can really go hand in hand, causing all sorts of problems.

I had done my project on incorporating exercise into a busy nurse's life. Ended the thing with a hand out of various exercises and the number of calories expended. Examples were:

Running around in circles, 150 calories
Making mountains out of molehills, 650 calories

I have the list somewhere.
