I am a young nursing student just looking into all my options and I would like to know as much information about Maternal-Neonatal Nursing as possible so that I may one day become a Certified Lactation Consultant!

Hey back to you Jess!
During my varied 31 years of nursing, I spent about a total of about 5 years working OB/Nsy. Three before having children and 2 after. The best and most beneficial experience with teaching breast feeding to new moms came after having 2 of my own. One would have nothing to do with breast feeding probably due to an emergency c/section after 30 hrs of labor and getting bottle fed for a day due to my complications. The other was born sucking his fingers with a repeat (no labor) c/section, and latched on immediately and never had a problem. Now, I'm not suggesting that you have children in order to teach!!! lol But, do ask every woman you know what their experiences were like, good and bad. Did they go to breast feeding classes? Have mothers and sisters or best girlfriend who breast fed and mentored them? Have easy labor and deliveries or terrible L&D experiences? Complications for mom or babe? The more you see and feel others experiences and then good results, the better you can teach. I loved my years of mother/baby nursing and I learned so much from my patients. You will too, 'cause you are motivated to. Have a wonderful nursing life.
