Re: I want to work with babies

Several types of nurses work with babies. It depends how sick they are. NNICU is a NeoNatal Intensive Care Unit. Those babies are usually premature, but not always, but they are very sick. They need someone who is highly trained and can think quickly. Moms stay in the hospital such a short time now that regular nursery nurses don't get much time with those babies. They must teach the mom's lots in a short period of time.

I don't take care of babies as a nurse and I am in awe of those who do. I am kinda scared of babies. They seem so fragile and can't tell ya what's wrong.

Hope this helps some. As I am not up-to-date with all they do but I'm sure someone will come along here and give you more info.

Mom's and Babies that's what I've always and only wanted to do even though I've done other things too. First you have to be a nurse then get hired into an area that takes care of babies. As above you have the NICU. Then there is also regular nursery for babies just born. Pediatrics is anybody not an adult that has left the hospital and come back so it might be a 3 day old up to 16-18 yr old. There is regular pediatrics and PICU.
You can do home health and see babies at home, most of my home health patients were on phototherapy so I had to weigh them and take blood. Had some that were referrals from the court to make sure they were being taken care of. Some just to weigh to see they were growning, some just to teach mom's how to take care of them.
    Peditricians offices
    WIC office
    Health Dept
all see lots of babies. There is lots more to taking care of babies then just rocking them too. Some people think they nursery nurses have it easy cause they have little patients but you also have lots of family involved with sick kids so your teaching parents, grandparents etc

I'm 15 years old and I want a career on nurses that work with babies. What I want is information on what the nurse is called and how many years I have to go to collage and for what. Please e-mail me back with this information.

You're looking to work in either "special care nursery, neonatal intensive care unit, or pediatrics"

You don't go to any special school, all nursing schools give you the same basic education (2-4year programs). Once you have a license and graduate, then you start getting the specialized training you are looking for.

You can find more info on http://www.nursefriendly.com/nicu

    Hope that helps.

Re: I want to work with babies

Most people think that working with babies, especially in the hospital setting, is a piece of cake. Actually, to work with babies takes a special kind of nurse. Training by becoming a nurse is just the beginning, whether you are an LPN or an RN. Then you have to like babies, you have to incorporate teaching new mothers how to take care of their new baby, and then you have to know what makes a baby tick (so to speak). The love of being a nurse is the most important part of taking care of something so small and helpless, who can't tell you what is wrong when they cry, and who seem to trust you literally with their life. After going to nursing school, you would need to apply for a job in the nursery of the hospital that you want to work in. The training is there, but sometimes it can be frustrating when potential employers say they want experienced nurses-how do you get experience if you have never been able to get the experience that is needed? Just by hanging in there will get you the experience that you want if you really have a love of baby care.
