| Re: Fluid and Electrolytes? HELP please! Some important things to remember: ALWAYS give fluids with potassium on an IV pump, NEVER give more than 10meq potassium per hour. And an added note from a patient I just had in the ER last night. If the lab reports your electrolytes as very abnormal, always re-draw the blood to double check... last night in the ER I had a patient who had routine labs done at the clinic. She went home, and the clinic called her later and told her to call 911 and take an ambulance in the the ER immediately, because her potassium was 6.8!!! She was asymptomatic, and EKG was normal. I re-drew the potassium, and it was 3.8...... So, her clinic caused her to call 911, incur an ambulance and ER bill, all because they probably hemolyzed her lab specimen at the clinic.....
