Another student cheated off of me......

Long story short, we were doing a computer session, and I saved my work to my computer before emailing it in to one of my instructors.

needless to say, I forgot to delete the original file, so another student came along and copied my work. Whoever it was was stupid, so they didn't even bother to change MY name on the report.

Now, BOTH of us are in trouble. We are going in for meetings with the head of the nursing department for disciplinary reasons.

The thing is, I didn't do anything wrong. I was told that if I am beligerant, then it wouldn't sit well with the department head...but I don't want to act all remorseful and admit guilt about something I did not do.

Basically, the instructor is claiming that I allowed the other student to copy my work, when no such thing happened at all.

I explained in detail what happened, and was told that by me not deleting the file, I allowed the other person to cheat, and therefore I am subject to the school's cheating policy which includes removing me from the program with a note on my permanant record!

I'm so mad I could scream. Any suggestions on what to do? If I go into the meeting and tell the truth which is "I have no idea what happened. I did my work on the computer and emailed it in. I guess I forgot to delete the original off the machine I was working on, and the other student copied my work" it sounds like I am trying to weasel my way out of trouble. If I act remorseful and say I allowed her to cheat, then I am basically telling the school "yeah, I'm dishnonest. You cannot trust me to be a nurse"

HELP!

Re: Another student cheated off of me......

You have to tell the truth - it is the only option!!! I would much rather have it on my file that I made a mistake rather that purposrfull allowed someone to cheat. If you lie you may regret it in the future. I hope it all works out ok

Re: Another student cheated off of me......

Let them know that it was an honest mistake on your part by not deleting the file, But stress that you did not allow the other student to cheat. Then let them realize that you are willing to cooperate with them in getting to the bottom of the situation, even if it is doing a different project. Is there a way to track down log in names after you left the computer lab?
